About Derek Lake
I am interested in entering Systems Biology/Pharmaceutical field focused on transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. I aspire to leverage this interdisciplinary intersection to enhance comprehensive molecular diagnostics/bioinformatic analysis, Machine Learning-assisted drug discovery, and translational (bench to bedside) development of cellular and genomic therapeutics.I am currently enrolled as MS of Translational Pharmaceutical Science: Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Track candidate at Case Western Reserve University with an anticipated completion of Fall 2024. I earned a BS in Biomedical Science, a minor in Chemistry, and Biotechnology certificate, from Northern Arizona University (NAU) in May 2023. My achievements were further recognized when awarded one of NAU's highest honors, the Distinguished Senior Award for the College of Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences. During my work at the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute at NAU, I investigated the use of Oxford Nanopore's MinION (R.10.4.1) long read sequencing in conjunction with development of bioinformatic pipelines, including use of the UNCALLED algorithm to improve current genomic diagnostic protocols for anthrax detection and development of a python-based pipeline, VariantValet.py, to bin viral variant specific amplicons (SARS-CoV-2).Starting in 2021, I assisted in the development of a protocol for the CDC consisting of the sequencing of B. anthracis directly from clinical blood samples using the UNCALLED algorithm . In 2021, I also assisted further in the discovery of putative vectors of an emerging parasite, Ochocerca lupi, in the Southwestern USA with use of molecular identification methods gaining a co-authorship in Frontiers-Vet. Sci. This led me to receipt of a Hooper Undergraduate Research Award, a $5k year long student-led research grant starting in July 2022, entailing deconvolution and detection of mixed-variant SARS-CoV-2 samples. I accomplished this project with the use of amplicon enrichment, long read sequencing, and development of a bioinformatic haplotyping pipeline. I have also developed a leadership skillset as Reactionary Team Leader for 14 US Navy Riverines, Entry Control Point Supervisor, and Small Craft Navigator/Radio Operator within Riverine Squadron IV and later Coastal Riverine Squadron II in the U.S. Navy. I have also enhanced my ability to quickly adapt to dynamic situations in new cultures, gaining experience backpacking from Mexico to Patagonia for over a year while functioning as a volunteer summit medic (NREMT).
