Derek founded the Five Labs in 2015 as an extension of the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education’s (FORE) educational mission. Since opening in January 2015, the Five Labs Tampa facility has become one of the busiest bioskills lab and conference centers in the US. Five Labs is a 15,000 sq ft facility that is routinely utilized for medical education, conferences, and product development. Additionally, it partners with a research & development team that contracts with surgeons and medical device companies to create and test new technologies. Onsite 3D printing, biomechanical testing, and advanced computer simulation & analytics enable rapid iteration. Five Labs began a national expansion in 2018 opening its second location just outside of Cincinnati. In 2019, Five Labs acquired a lab in Las Vegas and another in Atlanta. Five labs opened its San Antonio location in 2022 and will open additional locations in 2023. Five Labs has created an environment that has attracted global medical device companies and world-renowned surgeons to its locations for educational events and new technology development.
