As VP of Technology, I am actively involved in the creation and implementation of new business models that are enabling builders and developers to leverage new technologies to build better, more sustainable communities, while continuing to ensure the profitability of their businesses. My job is at the forefront of all s2e's research efforts, and is particularly focused on the development industry. Pilot projects that I am managing range from 7 to 1,000 acres, from a few to 2,000 homes of all shapes/sizes/densities, with integrated mixed community uses and amenities from parks to retail to industrial, with gross values over $10 Billion.My current role builds on all my past roles, and anything I've done in the past or any contact we may have had is still a valid and true part of the services and network I represent through s2e. From sustainable community planning to government program creation to industrial efficiency or business planning, the s2e team and network truly does it all, and I'm very proud to be part of the team we have here.

Board and governance oversight of Mindscape's ongoing operations, advising staff, liaising industry relationships, and advocating government at all levels. Primary responsibilities include oversight of business position and strategy, particularly with respect to relationships with external partners, and in continuing to grow the impact realized while serving on staff as Chief Innovation Officer.

Managing multiple operating divisions focussing on green building and green energy consulting, training, and policy work: driving business development, managing corporate development (growth planning, human resource management, financial management), developing corporate practice, and delivering projects.Responsible for over 450 Mindscape projects since 2005, with the following results:1) Economic Impact: >66 person-yrs. of direct employment, with gross revenues of ~$4.3 million, leveraged to create nearly $2 billion in economic activity. If we include the impacts of government and industry-wide programs we’ve managed or been part of, then that number rises to nearly $500 billion in activity that Mindscape has helped to stimulate and support, under Derek's leadership.2) Presence: participation in over 100 tradeshows and events, and over 160 training workshops, educating thousands of people directly, and hundreds of thousands indirectly.3) Influence: published regularly in over a dozen media outlets and professional / trade magazines, totaling nearly 100 published articles (almost one monthly since founding Mindscape). The Mindscape newslist grew to ~2600 subscribers in the first year, growing steadily every month.4) Awards: Mindscape and/or I personally have earned 14 awards (local through international) since 2005, and our projects have earned well over 100 more.5) Environment: Our projects have directly resulted in nearly 10,000 tonnes of annual GHG emissions avoided, have helped add nearly 85,000 kW of clean electricity on Ontario’s energy grid, and have affected over 36 million square feet of improved buildings. If we include the affects of regional and national programs that Mindcape has helped to launch and manage under my management, then those numbers scale up to a startling 480,000 tonnes of annual GHG emissions avoided, over 2,000,000 kW of clean electricity generators (ie: 2 GW), and nearly 1.5 billion square feet of improved buildings.

I deeply enjoyed the unique privilege of Chairing this competition, with the incredible staff and volunteers behind it. The entrants were truly the best in the industry, and the students were simply wonderful. This competition has helped shape the future of homebuilding in Ontario, and of the places we all live. I look forward to seeing it revive in the future with even stronger partnerships and larger influence, and I hope to be involved then too!

OntarioGreenSpec.ca is an online database of product and service providers within the green building and green energy markets of Ontario. As Managing Director, I built partnerships, business development channels, and programs such as www.hsh-competition.ca: the Home Sweet Home competition, which took the content of OntarioGreenSpec.ca from being only a list to being a celebrated resource that enables and catalyzes change.

Project Engineer working on LEED projects, sustainability design, commissioning, and measurement & verification systems. Duties ranged from planning of LEED projects to advising other consultants to designing and commissioning sustainable elements (eg: efficient mechanical systems, well sealed building envelopes, etc).

Project engineering: design of electrical and controls systems, including lighting, power, life-safety, building automation, industrial process safety, and industrial automation, for markets ranging from commercial office to government or academic institutions, retail to pharmaceutical or automotive manufacturing. Standard project priorities include clearly identifying the design problem, balancing process and energy efficiency, maximizing consistency of quality/durability, communication across diverse stakeholders (executive to production to external), and tight controls on schedule and budget.
