Mr. Thurston is a member of the Digital Platforms and Infrastructure Team and is involved in the design and management of the Open Source Cloud Broker initiative (developed in-house), as well as the OpenStack strategic investment, and provides support as an Open Source and Linux Operating System SME. Mr. Thurston has supported client infrastructure consolidation and virtualization efforts and provided AWS experience to implement a cloud based commercial device that dispenses pills for clinical trials.

At Neustar, Mr. Thurston was a Senior Systems Administrator who has experience leading teams that are responsible for the management of the global infrastructure (US, UK, Netherlands, Hong Kong) consisting of 500+ production Linux servers running DNS software, Oracle databases, and other custom software. In addition, Mr. Thurston managed another 500+ bare metal and virtualized Linux servers in development, quality assurance, and preproduction environments as well as managing multiple HP C7000 blade chassis and created/maintained documentation for systems management and troubleshooting. As well, Mr. Thurston designed and developed a virtualization solution to successfully replace certain physical servers with Xen based versions in production that would reduce rack space and overall costs of operation. Mr. Thurston planned and executed a SAN installation at the organizations London node which required the migration from attached SCSI based storage to the new SAN based storage; this was accomplished with no customer impact. Lastly, Mr. Thurston built out a "node" location in a single rack, coordinated configuration with various teams, documented, shipped, and managed the install remotely in a Terremark facility in Columbia.

Mr. Thurston maintained a full OLTP production setup with DMZ and LAN behind dual Cisco firewalls that handled over a million data points daily. Mr. Thurston helped with all phases of scaling systems infrastructure from 7 servers and a handful of customers to one hundred plus servers and one million data points daily. In addition to the production systems, Mr. Thurston helped execute two office moves, grow the office Exchange 2003 server infrastructure providing secure and remote email access and provided VPN connectivity. Some of the technologies utilized while at Satellite Tracking of People were Red Hat Linux, Oracle 9i, Windows Small Business Server 2003, Exchange, SharePoint, IIS6, Apache, ESRI ArcSDE, ESRI ArcIMS, Cisco VPN access for home connections, and VMWare server on Linux.

At the National Education Association Mr. Thurston was responsible for the scheduling and successful completion of 450+ jobs on HP/UX based servers running on a 24/7/365 schedule. In addition, Mr. Thurston programmed and maintained scripts calling COBOL and C programs in an HP/UX 11 environment. As well, Mr. Thurston was responsible for ensuring timely receipt of vendor data and to manage communications to vendors for NEA Member Benefits. Mr. Thurston maintained a "Production Control Manual" outlining the procedures in detail for the production control position. Mr. Thurston created an Entity Relationship Diagram of the membership database (2.8 million members) using Oracle Designer 2000 as well as the database table definition dictionary.
