Recent changes to my organization are a result of the Consumer Products space being reorganized into several portfolios under Online Experiences in order to provide more focus to leaders. I partner with an Associate Director of Product to manage several teams including an Enterprise Graph Platform bringing graphQL to Best Buy in order to unlock access to data via a data layer for the enterprise and improve the flow or time to market for Stream Aligned product teams. In addition, I lead a performance team focused on improving performance of our eCommerce offering. Performance is so impactful to our customers, fostering long term value and improved relationships, with the added bonus of improving revenue. I also lead the Global View Platform, a custom-built platform capable of web scale volumes, processing over a billion requests a day. The browsing portion of Best Buy dotcom experience runs on this platform.RAPTOR is an SRE team, which focuses on building out tools and capabilities and paring with stream aligned teams to realize a DevOps vision. A new and exciting capability the EVOC team is building are customer surveys that are custom designed and scalable, capturing data for downstream analysis.

In February 2019 front-end engineering product teams that work on the browsing portion of the Best Buy retail website were added to my responsibilities. I also lead teams in the Voice Assistants (Alexa, Google), IoT, and Mobile APIs teams for the Best Buy mobile application retail experience. These customer obsessed product teams are well established and roles that I manage include Engineering (front end, back end and full stack development), Engineering Leadership, Software/Operations Engineering, Business System Analysts and Quality Assurance/Quality Engineering.As a Director of Engineering, I focus on increasing the maturity of my engineering product teams, working to get them to manage to outcomes through intent based leadership development and adoption of DevOps practices. I challenge my teams to build quality products through solid engineering practices, including agile methodologies and test-driven approaches.I co-chair the Community Engagement Committee where the mission is to share the Best Buy Digital & Technology (D&T) story to become an employer of choice in the local tech market that focuses on innovation and inclusion.In addition, I am a member of the Digital Advisory Council that is focused on building a Digital First strategy for the parent D&T organization and Best Buy as a whole.I am an advisor to the Talent Pillar for the D&T Engineering Community of Practice. The mission of the Engineering CoP is to help hire, train, and keep the best team of software engineers. This group is currently focused on rolling out new job families that we have designed for software engineers and engineering leaders, along with constituency management guidance, career coaching and skill development.I am also sponsor for Practice Pillar for the Engineering CoP which is dedicated to the definition, promotion, and enrichment of the Engineering discipline across Best Buy. We do this through bottom-up initiatives, community-building, resources, and empowerment.

In this role I was the Associate Engineering Director for several development teams including, Voice Assistants (Alexa, Google), IoT, External Tools, Digital Innovations Lab, Mobile APIs for Best Mobile Retail and the Best Buy Home experience. I built these teams from the ground up given my vision for the product team needs and the roles include Engineering (full stack development), Engineering Leadership and Quality Assurance.It was so exciting to work in a lot of new and developing channels for retail and also post purchase support.

In this role I took on the challenge of building out a Dotcom Architecture team for Best Buy. In addition I was responsible for the strategic vision of the Digital Platform. In the transformation journey Best Buy had sought to build a shared nothing architecture focused on the principles of MVC. While this goal was achieved for the Browsing aspects of the retail experience it led to some undesirable results. The model layer which was aggregating data was beginning to morph back into the monolith of the prior state.I wrote a white paper on the need to transition away from building applications to building Restful Domain Services. The goal was to isolate not only the business logic so the company could move faster to market with new initiatives, but to also isolate the run time environments to provide high scale and highly available services across Dotcom. I worked with the Best Buy Product Development team to deliver a solution architecture for https://www.bestbuy.com/ignite. This new offering from Best Buy focuses on consumer electronics from startup companies and is built using Node and retrieves data from various domain services built on the Global Digital Platform.I also developed solution architecture that allowed for the personalization of content for various customer segments.

I served as a Consultant Lead where I had 6-9 consultants under my leadership. In this role I worked with the leadership team and tackled subjects like hiring procedures, development of a non compete for the company, client engagement issues, coaching/mentoring and talent development.In addition I had the title of senior consultant taking on many different projects/roles with various clients in the Twin Cities.I took on the role of solution architect at Best Buy which was a self lead/self directed engagement. I partnered with many groups in order to be able to design/architect and engineer the solution for moving the Homepage off ATG to the public cloud. I worked to gather metrics and analytics to develop a performance test plan to solve for scale needs. I also lead several subsequent initiatives moving product detail pages, category pages and sales pages to the public cloud.I was the Engineering Lead for the GE Vehicle Ordering System project where I worked to design the vehicle ordering process of the application. Complete proof of concept and then implement code for Spring Integration, PayPal, JSR 303 Validation, Spring Method Caching, DOJO Internationalization and localization. The deployment of the new application reduced driver "how to"calls by 45%. I took on the role of the Project Lead for the MNSCU accounting system and also the Security Administration System, a multi-year effort that had several contract and employee engineers.I had the opportunity to build and extend the Hazelden Content Management tool. I lead the engagement with Hazelden providing estimates and managing the work effort of the team.At Boston Scientific CRM Division I was initially placed to write Jasper reports. Instead a team member and I took it upon ourselves to develop an application to read system requirements which were stored in XML format and generate Jasper reports. The application was featured in one of the quarterly meetings as an example of ingenuity.

I worked as a consultant at the Minnesota Department of Revenue and they continued to renew and extend my engagement. I worked on several project during this time and had roles as variant as Project Lead/Business Analyst/Architect and Senior Engineer.I developed the EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) application which has a workflow engine toprovide for custom activity processing and a browser based GUI. The system processes electronicpayment data, balances accounts and sends the data to MDOR internal systems including the Taxpayer Accounting Application (TPA). I lead a team of 4-6 developers during this project. I created plans in Microsoft Project for each phase of development, assigned work to developers and reported to client site manager on status.Worked with a business team to gather requirements. Used a subset of Rational Unified Process to guide the requirements gathering process. Provided the Use Case Realization Specifications to the software developers on the project. Used J2EE patterns where appropriate and tailored the rest of the system to custom patterns.Supervised and participated in the implementation/development of the system.I also worked on the electronic pre-processing system which is custom built document processing/workflow system. The system receives electronic documents, processed them and sends them onto department tax divisions.I worked in Java in my own time and took several courses at Dakota country which allowed me to convince my client to allow me to transition from PowerBuilder to Java. In my first Java project I designed and developed a web service (before they were called web services) application that interpreted HTTPS requests and then fetched legacy data for a third party provided web application.Previous work at the Department of Revenue included several years of developing PowerBuilder applications for various initiatives.

In my first professional role out of University I threw myself into the job. I developed processes to manage the resolution and prioritization of bugs in the existing systems along with coding the solutions. The process resulted in a significant increase in quality, reducing the number of outstanding bugs and also reducing the number of new bugs. This lead to new opportunities and expanded responsibilities, including team lead. I also helped to deliver several new applications for Agpro including an Inventory Management application for the terminals and a new Contract Management application for producers.
