Senior Veterinary TechnologistOnderstepoort Biological Products Jun 1990 - Jun 1996South AfricaFrom 1990/06/25 to 1991/12/31 I completed my studies and practical year at Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP).In my practical year I worked in the Quality Control section where I did routine laboratory work, sterility and safety tests on all vaccines, viral and bacterial titration’s to determine the yield and potency of the vaccines. I also worked with small and large experimental animals in the completion of some of these tests. I was responsible for documenting the test results and helped with the completion and issuing of test certificates.Once qualified I was transferred to the Freeze drying, Bottling and Packaging section where all Biological Products produced are bottled and packed. This was one of the largest sections at OBP.I was second in charge of the section and was directly responsible for 5 people (all in supervisory positions) and indirectly for 26 people (assistants, operators, etc.). My responsibilities included the scheduling of all items that needed to be sterilized on a weekly basis and ensuring that it was done. I had to ensure that there were enough raw materials for the Bottling and Freeze drying processes, otherwise it could result in a major loss of production time and hundreds of thousands of rands per batch of vaccine produced.Organizing that breakdowns in production equipment were seen to and repaired.The running of the Freeze Drying Plant (then worth approx. six million rand) as well as the supervision and control of other apparatus used in the section (liquid nitrogen cabinets, autoclaves, filling and capping lines, etc.). All the external ordering for the section as well as the composition of service contracts and tenders under R 100 000.
