Elucidation of the molecular properties behind flotillin mediated membrane organization in Bacillus subtilis. The membrane and its organization is a hallmark of life. The proper function of membrane proteins depends on spatiotemporal organization of the membrane through the formation of defined micro-membrane domains. It was previously shown that in Bacillus subtilis the flotillins FloT and FloA are essential for organization and flotillins are thought to be actively involved in this process.However, it is not known how membrane micro-domains are organized and how flotillins are involved in this process.

Tasks: Optimising a plate reader assay used to measure bacterial cell membrane potential, and investigating the connection between membrane fluidity, membrane potential, and the membrane binding of essential components of the cell division machinery. With the use of different dyes and fluorescent protein constructs, protocols were written in such a way they can be published and used by others in doing novel antibiotic screenings. This research is thought to be most valuable in the battle against resistant bacteria, often encountered in untreatable infections.

The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) is the premier student synthetic biology competition. The foundation is dedicated to education and competition, advancement of synthetic biology, and the development of open community and collaboration. Tasks: investigating the movement and mobility of the glucocorticoid and estrogen receptor in the nucleus with the use of advanced microscopy techniques. Multiple constructs and mutations of the glucocorticoid receptor are made in order to visualize the function and structure of different domains of the receptor. The main aim of the research is to gain a better understanding of drug resistance in humans.

Tasks: investigating the immune response associated pathways in Arabidopsis, especially the pathways involving transcription factor WRKY42. Gene expression under the influence of different over-expression and knock-out constructs were investigated with the use of Northern-blot, and different in-vitro assays including EMSA and protein pull-down were done.
