About Derrick Harkness
I began my studies at Salt Lake Community College where I earned my Associates Degree in Music. While there, I served as president of the choirs, assistant choral director, and participated actively in fundraising for concerts and trips. These experiences helped me to become a more dedicated student and prepare for more leadership opportunities.I transferred to Utah State University with hopes of completing my undergraduate degree in Mathematics Education. The change in majors occurred while considering my employment possibilities after my education was complete and the need and demand for teachers in secondary education. I have always known I wanted to be a teacher and outside of music, mathematics was something I have always loved and enjoyed. Thus, the change was made and I have enjoyed learning about mathematics and mathematics education.While at Utah State I had the opportunity to prepare for a career as an educator by working as a tutor, recitation leader and instructor. These wonderful opportunities provided me with invaluable experience in helping others learn mathematics and develop deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.After completing my undergraduate work, I taught in the public school system while I continued to work on my Master's degree in Mathematics Education. I returned to school full-time in order to finish my Master's degree and while their, I worked as a Graduate Teaching assistant teaching a variety of classes as the principal instructor. I finished my Master's degree in the spring of 2017 with renewed motivation to pursue my doctorate degree.While completing my Master's degree, I began working on my doctorate in Mathematics with an emphasis in Education. I continued to work as a Graduate Teaching assistant teaching several classes and working on the professional development of graduate students as teachers. My main research focus has been on high-quality instruction, using precise language in teaching mathematics and devolping valid assessments that measure student achievement of higher cognitive objectives.I love teaching mathematics and studying ways I can improve my own teaching as I continue to work with others to help them improve their own.
