About Derrick M. Fleming, Jr., Ms
With nearly 15 years of experience in the nonprofit and government sectors, I am a strategic leader and equity champion who is passionate about education, social impact, youth development, and mentorship. I recently served as the Managing Director of Strategic Engagement at Chicago Scholars, a nonprofit organization that supports over 6,000 high school, college, and alumni scholars from underrepresented communities in Chicago. In this role, I oversaw corporate, college, civic, and community partnerships, as well as new strategic initiatives, such as expanding our service delivery model to serve more young men of color and advancing system change and equity work. Under my leadership, I have launched and secured funding for a new Young Men of Color Program, supervised and curated programming for first-generation students with goals of attending highly selective colleges, and co-managed organizational restructuring, strategic planning, and program growth. I have also implemented and led professional development trainings for staff and partners, and contributed to fundraising and revenue generation efforts that have sustained a $8+ million operating budget. I am also an alum of the IMPACT Fellowship at Chicago Urban League/UChicago Booth School of Business and the Surge Fellowship at Surge Institute, two prestigious leadership development programs that empower and elevate leaders of color in the education and social justice fields. Also, I'm a 2022 Aspen Institute Fellow and 2021 Forefront Illinois Fellow. In 2023, I was featured in Forbes for my work in advancing educational outcomes for boys and young men color in Chicago on the south and west sides (link on profile).I'm currently on a mission to develop root cause solutions to eradicate and dismantle historic and current forms of institutional racism and additionally, eliminate the racial wealth and achievement gaps through the power of amplified voice, social/collective impact, coalition building, and human-centered design & design thinking.Lastly, I'm the curator of “The JUST BE campaign.” which is a social movement to allow ALL people to “JUST BE”!!! The JUST BE campaign. is meant to help dismantle current and historic systemic forms of oppression or indifference, foster anti-racism, eliminate hate, and activate individuals both personally and professionally to choose themselves and love themselves "honestly, authentically, transparently" (HAT). "When the collective chooses themselves, we demonstrate what true inclusion and respectful difference looks like."
