Derrick Wagner, P.G. Work Experience Details
  • Oklahoma Water Resources Board
Technical Studies Manager (Environmental Programs Manager Ii)
Oklahoma Water Resources Board May 2022 - Present
    Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States
I manage the Technical Studies section at the Oklahoma Water Resources Board overseeing aquifer studies that are completed in-house as well as contracted to the USGS as published Scientific Investigation Reports. I directly supervise five geologists and manage the annual section budget along with overseeing five active aquifer studies in my group and coordinating with the Oklahoma/Texas USGS office on seven additional active aquifer studies in Oklahoma. I also help coordinate the results of our aquifer studies with our groundwater permitting section for long-term allocation of groundwater in Oklahoma.
  • Oklahoma Water Resources Board
Water Resources Geologist (Environmental Programs Manager)
Oklahoma Water Resources Board Nov 2013 - May 2022
    Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area
In this role, I was the project manager for the Elk City Sandstone and Blaine Gypsum aquifer studies in west/southwest Oklahoma. I coordinated work to locate wells to measure and perform tests on for potentiometric surface, saturated thickness, and hydraulic conductivity maps. I set up continuous recorders in aquifers, monitoring hourly water levels since 2015. I had three streamflow gauging stations installed in the Elk City Sandstone aquifer and measured wells each month for two years to monitor the water table and baseflow fluctuation in a regional method to derive storativity. Three streamflow gauging stations were installed in streams in the Blaine Gypsum aquifer to estimate storativity using the same regional method.I was lead author on the Elk City Sandstone aquifer report, published in January 2022. I was the second author on the Rush Springs aquifer report, which was the largest aquifer report published by the Oklahoma Water Resources Board, in August 2018. I was also a co-author on the USGS published reports on the Canadian River Alluvium and Terrace aquifer, the North Fork Red River aquifer, and Salt Fork Red River aquifer reports. I have presented hydrogeologic research and agency issues as a representative of the OWRB at the National Ground Water Association's Groundwater Week event in December 2022 in Las Vegas as well as at the Oklahoma Governor's Water Conference and Research Symposium, the Oklahoma Ground Water Association Conference, and the Oklahoma Clean Lakes & Watershed Association.I have also worked on writing agency rules for marginal water permits and aquifer storage and recovery.I have taken training on MODFLOW at the USGS National Center in Reston, VA, two short courses on aquifer testing for improved hydrogeologic site characterization by Midwest Geosciences Group, and short courses with the National Groundwater Association on different methods of calculating recharge, and applications of groundwater geochemistry.
