Ph.D. Thesis Title: An Examination of the Response of Mammalian Cells to Oxidative DNADamage in Relation to Ageing and Neurodegeneration Using Recombinant Adenovirus Vectors• Perfected a number of technical skills including: mammalian tissue culture, viral and retroviral infections, PCR, DNA and Protein extraction, immunoprecipitation, enzymatic activity assays, fluorescence in situ hybridization, Southern and western blotting. • Initiated and established a collaborative research project with another research group that led to a graduate student position and the current research goal of the lab. • Co-mentored and trained the student assigned to the collaborative research project resulting in a number of peer reviewed publications including one I received co-authorship on: Batenburg NL, Mitchell TR, Leach DM, Rainbow AJ, Zhu XD. Nucleic Acids Res. 2012 Oct; 40(19):9661-74. • Published three additional scientific articles in peer reviewed journals with additional manuscripts in preparation for submission (Leach DM, Zacal NJ and Rainbow AJ. Mutagenesis, 2013 Sep; 28(5):507-13). • Attended and presented primary research data at 3 international, 1 national and 3 regional conferences. (Leach D.M. and Rainbow A.J. Meeting on the Molecular Genetics of Aging, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY, Sept 2008). • Effectively managed my time between laboratory research, graduate courses, teaching and volunteering.
