About Des Dillon
Dr. Desmond Dillon is a Principal Technical Leader and clean energy R&D Manager with the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI's) Advanced Generation sector in Palo Alto, California. He is currently an EPRI lead for their Low Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI), focused on the production of alternative energy carriers for economy wide decarbonization. During his time at EPRI he has worked extensively on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology, renewable hybrids, hydrogen production, and energy storage solutions to address the growing demand for clean, affordable, and reliable electric power. He has applied his innovative thinking skills and gained a wide spectrum of experience from initial concept evaluation through to full scale detailed engineered solutions. Dillon has over 25 years global engineering and project management experience in low carbon research and development for the power generation sector and has successfully executed a number of large multi-million dollar research projects for EPRI's members, as well as the US Department of Energy and other international stakeholders. In line with EPRI's public mission he has written and published several key techno-economic studies in this specialist subject area. In addition, he has regularly presented EPRI research results at international energy forums and leading Green House Gas (GHG) conferences. Prior to EPRI, Dillon worked in the United Kingdom in the power engineering sector, developing CO2 capture technologies (Post Combustion Capture and Oxyfuel systems) for large utility plants. Managing collaborative R&D efforts with other OEMs and utility partners through large in-house and European Union Funded projects. Dillon obtained his Mechanical Engineering PhD, from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, for Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) combustion and emissions research, which was undertaken at the National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) and sponsored by Mitsui Babcock Energy Limited. Prior to his doctorate research he was based in Derby, England as a Development Engineer with Rolls Royce Aero Engines, evaluating and testing, cost reduction designs for their commercial V2500 jet engine. Dillon also holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Product Design Engineering, awarded jointly from the University of Glasgow & Glasgow School of Art.

Senior Project Engineer: Process Technology And Development
• Focused on development and evaluation of CO2 abatement and capture technologies for the next generation of power plant.• Main technical responsibilities centred on thermal and process design investigations of utility boilers, HRSG’s and process plants as well as concept / feasibility studies of next generation technology.• Mitsui Babcock’s Principle Investigator and Work Package leader for European Union collaborative funded research, development and demonstration projects ENCAP and CASTOR. Thus responsible for a number of work packages to the approximate value of 2 million euros and co-ordinating numerous partnered companies based both in the UK and mainland Europe.• In addition, undertook commercial process design work for the UK nuclear sector.
Phd Researcher (Post-Graduate Training Partnership)
• Industrial PhD combustion research sponsored by NEL, EPSRC & Mitsui Babcock • Investigating combustion and NOx predictions of coal fired burners using the FLUENT CFD code and validating results with test data from the Mitsui Babcock's NOx Reduction Test Facility. • The academic content of the research was assessed by the University of Strathclyde with the final external examination of the thesis undertaken by the University of Leeds. • Following this industrial focused research, the PhD degree was awarded in October 2002
