Viren Brahmbhatt is an architect and urban designer, and Founder, Principal of de.Sign Studio based in New York City. He is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Spitzer School of Architecture, CCNY and has taught design studios at GSAPP, Columbia University, Pratt Institute, and Sam Fox School, Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to setting up his own private practice, Viren worked on various significant projects for NYC Housing Authority as an Architect and Chief Urban Designer and directed projects aimed at improving the quality of life for New York City neighborhoods. He conceptualized the design and implementation of the Community Centers Program, Citywide GIS, Housing Regeneration at Markham Gardens (Staten Island), Master Plans for HOPE VI Projects in Brooklyn; and design proposals for the preservation and future development of affordable housing on 30 NYCHA sites, using untapped development potential (FAR). He also served on the Citywide GIS Steering Committee. Viren has received many honors throughout his career including the Design Trust for Public Space Fellowship, and was shortlisted for the Loeb Fellowship (GSD, Harvard) and Revson Fellowship (Columbia University, New York). His previously published work includes such independent projects as The Vacant City: Urban Design Project for The Mont Des Arts, Brussels (NAi Publishers) and thesis work Investigations into Architectural Design: Conceptions and Processes (CEPT, India). He has published frequently and written extensively on architecture and urbanism, including his ongoing research and thesis on Messy Urbanism in a recent publication NOW URBANISM: The Future City is Here, (Ed.), Routledge; January, 2015. He is currently working on two forthcoming books on Architecture and Urbanism focused on the Cities of the Global South.

We strive to produce structures that are at the forefront of contemporary issues, rooted in local culture and context and that address client needs as well as the functional requirements of the program. We have completed and are currently working on architectural, interior, industrial and urban design projects that bridge diverse scales and design typologies. Our comprehensive portfolio includes urban, residential, civic, commercial, institutional, hospitality, retail and housing design projects as well as historic restoration, space planning, graphic and furniture design. The principals have substantial experience with infrastructure planning and urban design projects that creatively push the envelope to bring architecture, planning and sustainability issues to the fore. The other spectrum of our work includes large-scale architecture and urban design projects that reflect our philosophy of integrated systems approach, allowing for seamless connection between the architecture of individual buildings and the master plan. We are rigorously engaged in all aspects of the design process from conception to completion and commissioning. Ours is a collaborative team of design professionals with extensive experience in LEED certification, project development, documentation, management and field experience.
