 In this role, I was given free reign to flex my systematization strengths in designing a suite of air traffic control protocols for my Assistant Deputy Minister’s Office. Though new to this level of the government food chain, I braved the challenge and channeled my excellence into a streamlined way of doing things by implementing efficient communication, airtight task management and solid client service. Successfully navigating this position brings together two of my strong suits: a high degree of respect for guests honed from a decade in restaurants and luxury hotels, with a heavy dose of the analytical-yet-pragmatic language of user requirements X and solutions Y that I soaked up in design school.

 Almost entirely through the lens of a colossal spreadsheet called the National Multi-Year Strategic Accommodation Plan (aka the “Five-Year Plan”) I managed CSC’s national parole office space envelope (> 40k m²). When I ascended to the position, the current tracking tools were two-dimensional and standalone; regional and national data were out of sync; and the digital inventory was disconnected from the actual 92 floor plans of our community correctional portfolio. And so, within these constraints, I designed a new system from the ashes of its dysfunctional predecessors. This was made all the more challenging as the Deficit Reduction Action Plan (DRAP) was in full effect, intent on reducing the federal government’s real property footprint – and since, by virtue of their security requirements, CSC’s community parole office spaces were ever-expanding, this made my analysis and tracking of current leases against future fit-up requirements all the more interesting of a puzzle to solve. In addition to number crunching, I also co-led the review of each parole office’s interior fit-ups. To be effective in this, I fostered sustained and robust stakeholder consultation to hear user needs and then appropriately digest that feedback into an articulate and fulsome final design, all the while ensuring alignment with the current Facility Guidelines for District and Parole Offices (my portfolio’s 70-page working policy document).

 Due to a cascade of senior positions being vacated, I was tapped to run the shop that gave me my start in government since by that point, I had the most experience. In this role, I was called upon to provide strategic advice to senior management (DG and above) as well as to national and regional staff on real property legislation, policies, practices and plans. My days involved anything from responding diplomatically to Parliamentary enquiries to producing knowledgeable analyses of CSC’s land use strategies, our acquisitions and disposals, easements, rights of way and license agreements. As the acting Manager, I also unofficially “covered” for my substantive position as well as two vacant real property positions and directly oversaw the work of the Real Property Information Analyst (EG-04).

 Leveraging an opportunity to grow within my Branch, I assumed the Senior Database Analyst role while maintaining the duties of my substantive position as the National Parole Analyst. Here, my main function was to support our internal Technical Services and Facilities family by providing flawless real property data in the form of accurate floor plans and maps, as well as timely, detailed reports. In this role, I saw an opportunity to render our group more proactive and progressive by designing user-centric and efficient objectives for scheduling, workflows and templates. This standardization of our communiqués, call-letters and reports had the net effect of increasing the overall reception and engagement with our products. As the acting Senior Database Analyst, I also oversaw the work of the Real Property Information Analyst (EG-04), their assignments and annual Performance Management Plan.

 At the NCC, I was afforded a rewarding, one-year Interchange Canada opportunity in a federal design shop where I happily flourished amid fellow industrious creatives. The scope of my work was principally focused on environmental graphics and outdoor signage, ranging from wayfinding solutions for Ottawa’s urban core, to (the form and graphic layout of) commemorative monuments and plaques. I was fortunate to also work on highly technical regulatory street signage as well as softer assignments like the Greenbelt’s informative-yet-artistic interpretive panels. To the delight of stakeholders, I delivered multiple small projects (< $25k) on-budget and on-schedule. I attribute my project management success on my situational awareness, deft timing, internal client diplomacy and ability to be tactile with contractors. In my exit interview, it was highlighted that though strong, my skills as a designer were eclipsed by my skills in deftly overseeing project execution...which I took as a complement as these are two sides of a solid coin.

 Given their dependence on private manufacturers, CSC chose to solve issues of cost and design by looking internally. Recently graduated from design school, I was elated to take on the challenge of making the standard, lowly food tray shine. And so, the spring of 2014 saw 28,000 of my cafeteria trays – and 12,000 segregation trays – manufactured and shipped to federal correctional institutions across Canada for immediate use. Though the property of the Crown, I am especially proud of the segregation tray as I eliminated three of the existing parts (and their respective moulds) ultimately making a stronger, more resilient, safer, more ergonomic tray with one single mould. Not coincidentally, by breathing modularity into the design, I doubled the product’s lifespan because both sides of the tray are identical and thus fully useable as they had never been before.  My first government position was to maintain the federal inventory of prison floor plans and geographic site plans for the entire national correctional portfolio. As a natural organizer, I became zealous about quality control. More broadly, I was part of a team of three working to re-systematize the Correctional Service’s entire inventory and rebuild how the data contained therein could be best harnessed by our internal stakeholders, eliminating inefficiency and duplication, thus saving tax-payers’ dollars and liability to the Crown.
