Erie, PA

Managed the fall migration banding program at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA. Duties included collection of migrant and resident body condition data, training and supervising SCA interns, and coordinating volunteers while running twelve temporary nets. Also gave educational demonstrations for groups and visitors to the banding station.

Northern Virginia

Used point counts and playbacks to implement a vital sign inventory and monitoring program for forest birds across parks of the National Capital Region (MD/VA/DC) for the NPS. Supervised and trained the point count crew for 2008 data collection. Also assisted with nest searching, spot-mapping and vegetation sampling as part of an independent side study.

Sierra Vista, AZ

Mist-netted passerines and conducted point count surveys as part of an investigation of migrant timing and habitat use based on tree phenology on the San Pedro River in Arizona. Data collection also included attaching radio transmitters to Wilson's warblers (Wilsonia pusilla) to record movement and foraging behavior and taking blood samples for parasite.

Berkeley Springs, WV

Initiated an environmental interpretation program that included designing in-store educational activities, business promotion, website design, and leading bird walks to teach basic identification.

Mist-netted passerines as part of a study of West Nile Virus and Lyme disease infection patterns in urban and suburban bird species in Washington D.C., Baltimore, MD and the surrounding areas. Passerines were caught using passive and target netting for blood and tick collection.

Rome, NY

Assisted in research on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) landscape use and disease spread potential as well as testing for Chronic Wasting Disease in central NY. Captured deer using clover traps and rocket-nets to attach GPS collars and take blood and tissue samples. Also used telemetry to determine deer status and movement.

Monitored lakes in the Adirondack Park for evidence of color-banded common loon (Gavia immer) survival and reproduction, surveyed forest small mammal diversity using mark-recapture techniques and used telemetry triangulation to locate radio-tagged white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
