Our audience is mostly middle- and lower-income Americans and I explain often complex government policy and court actions in a conversational, consumer-driven tone though a mix of aggregation and original reporting. I balance that with collaborating with photo, video, social media, email and PR staffers to lead the company's first longform enterprise project.

As a freelance journalist, I cover a wide rage of topics from possible gentrification in Southside St. Petersburg to describing what it's like to travel the world alone as a woman to parenting. In the early part of my freelance career, I also worked as an online copywriter, editor and social media coordinator from small businesses.

As a breaking news reporter, I regularly reported and wrote stories on the cops and crime beat. I learned to react quickly and report accurately in high stress breaking news situations. I wrote on daily deadlines but I also worked on larger investigative projects. While at the Sentinel I helped file countless public records requests to get hundreds of pages of data to put together a project called Focus on Force. It was a look into how the Orlando Police Department used force in comparison to other law enforcement agencies. The project was awarded by the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors and the Online News Association.My work in Orlando also required that I shoot and edit breaking news photos and videos and use social media to quickly share breaking news updates.

I was first brought on an unpaid general assignment intern. Then I was asked to return as a paid breaking news intern. Finally I was hired as a full-time breaking news multimedia journalist during my final semester in college. While still a student and working full-time at the paper, I covered court appearances in first-degree murder cases, assisted on the coverage of what became the national story about the hazing death of Florida A&M University drum major Robert Champion and often shot and edited my own videos and photos to accompany my stories.

Tallahassee, Florida Area

I was a summer editorial intern. I wrote several stories that published in the lifestyle magazine, including a cover story. I was asked to help make changes to a freelance feature article that was submitted but required additional reporting. I also assisted on photo shoots and community events hosted by the magazine.
