Founded my own company to do freelance data viz consulting

Working with online learning professionals to overhaul the fundamentals course in the 5-course "Data Visualization with Tableau" specialization on Coursera. Serving as on-camera instructor, as well as writing much of the content of the course.

* Promoted to managing team lead for the client-facing reporting team. * Interface directly with client administrators, customer care team, and strategic account executives to troubleshoot reports on tight deadlines. * Work closely with data engineers to build data models for new reports and maintain those for existing reports. * Partner with UX Design and Product to continue piloting new client-facing dashboards by leveraging Tableau to rapidly prototype and iterate based on customer feedback before front-end developers build them into native web applications.

* Overhauled existing client-facing Tableau dashboard suite to have a cleaner, more user-friendly and more accessible interface. * Began piloting new user-researched client-facing dashboards. * Served as resident Tableau expert at the company.

User Experience Team, Research & Development* Worked with DNA science team to prototype new product features using their latest data and discoveries. Prototypes were used in qualitative user testing to determine whether users wanted and understood the new concepts being presented.* Helped analysts and others in their use of Tableau and visualization best practices.* Tools: d3.js, vanilla Javascript, started learning React.js. Also Tableau Desktop tangentially.

Business Intelligence Team, and Product Analytics Team* Built beautiful executive-level dashboards for internal use throughout the company using Tableau Desktop.* Supported PR initiatives to help promote the Ancestry brand through Tableau Public visualizations.* Helped analysts and others in their use of Tableau and visualization best practices.

* Became adept at working with large, complicated data sets using Microsoft SQL Server, dabbled in Hadoop/Hive/HQL.* Brought order to the chaos of company-wide A/B testing on both an internal testing platform and using a third-party tool (Optimizely) by centralizing all information about upcoming, current, and past A/B tests. Collaborated extensively with people across the company to compile this information into a form consumable by everyone, including Customer Service, Quality Assurance, Engineering, Product, Finance, Marketing, and Executives. Hosted weekly meeting and sent weekly updates about what tests were coming down the pipeline so that no department was left in the dark about what would affect their corner of the company.* Worked with a team of analysts to deliver on various types of analysis requests from stakeholders throughout the company. Requests ranged from sample size calculations, to investigative analysis (such as customer engagement with particular product features, to inform future tests), to analyzing test results. Requests came from product managers, the User Experience team, directors, and executives, to name a few.* Championed documentation efforts to foster company-wide learning.* Built SQL Server functions and stored procedures for all departments to use to analyze A/B test results.* Collaborated with Senior Statistician to apply sound statistical methods to company testing procedures, such as controlling for Type I and Type II error rates in sample size calculations.* Acted as a liaison between Analytics and Business Intelligence.* Conducted product training as part of new employee orientation.* Learned and became fluent in T-SQL on the job.* Developed documentation on the company Wiki to support new hires in their onboarding, including compiling a glossary of company terms and acronyms.

Undergraduate student researcher.* Participated in Research Experience for Undergraduates, a summer program funded by the National Science Foundation, 2006 and 2008.* Learned and used the C programming language to determine best-fit parameters of Dark Energy.* Aided in preliminary research and simulations for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).* Researched the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the radiation left behind by the Big Bang.* Accomplished an outreach project on cosmology, intended for high school and community college students, where a movie was created about the history of cosmology. Explored nature of Dark Energy using Type 1a Supernova data.Used Matlab, a computational software package, to determine the best-fit parameters of Dark Energy.No previous training in astronomy or cosmology.
