My research interest is at the convergence of language and health outcomes. I am particularly attentive to how native language acts as a risk or protective factor in the contexts of cancer health disparities and special education disproportionality. I tend to employ mixed method approaches to this study, pairing secondary analysis with ethnography and/or discourse analysis. I analyze this work through critical syndemic theory that recognizes the interplay of biological and cultural factors that account for the multiplicity of identity markers simultaneously inhabited by individuals. My practice endeavors focus on increasing diversity and inclusion and cultural and linguistic competence for healthcare workers and educators through teaching and training. Additionally I coordinate and implement cultural and linguistic competence initiatives and engage in enterprise diversity and inclusion benchmarking. This work seeks to improve access and services to populations traditionally marginalized by education and healthcare systems.
