Dr. Mahadevan Mani retired in September 2013 as the Associate Executive Officer of the U.S. National Research Council (NRC), which functions as the principal operating agency of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in providing services to the government, the public, and the scientific and engineering communities. The NRC is administered jointly by both Academies and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and was organized by the NAS in 1916 to associate the broad community of science and technology with the purpose of furthering knowledge and advising the federal government. Dr. Mani joined the NRC in 1989 and held various positions including Director, Office of Institutional Research and Director, Board on Energy and Environmental Systems. Prior to joining the NRC, Dr. Mani was with TRW Inc., where he served as Director for Federal Marketing Development in the Federal Systems Group of TRW’s Defense and Space Sector and as Director of Planning and Analysis in the Science and Technology Department of TRW Inc. Earlier, Dr. Mani had been a Project Manager in the Energy and Environment Division of TRW’s Energy Systems Group on projects undertaken for the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and other clients.Dr. Mani holds a B.Tech degree in Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras; an M.S. in Materials Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia; and a PhD in Energy Management and Policy from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mani currently resides in the Washington, DC area.
