Developing chronic disease management programmes in the community locally and nationally.Coordinator/programme director for developing a national chronic disease management protocol. The proposal for diabetes was published as a review for the Ceylon Medical Journal in 1994.Chaired committees in private public partnerships in chronic disease management.Developing guidelinesEditor of the first national guidelines for diabetes and osteoporosis. These were the first evidence based guidelines on any aspect of medicine produced in Sri Lanka and included representation from Ministry of Health. Teaching and training medical staff and teaching medical studentsPostgraduate teaching and trainingDeveloping innovative practices in management of Diabetes and endocrinological conditions, focusing on high quality care and emphasis on community management Conducting research on use appropriate technology and cost benefit assessments of such innovations in a Sri Lankan setting. I have presented these data to the International Diabetes Federation and have published in peer-reviewed journals. I set up an electronic medical record for community based diabetes services in 1990 which is still in use for cohort studies.Developing the use of nurse practitioners and paramedical staff in the hospital and community I obtained a grant from the British council and arranged for two Sri Lankan nurses to be trained in diabetes nursing at the Manchester Diabetes Centre. The core group conducted national training course for nurses in diabetes at ENB level. Established a charitable trust that funds these activities. A dialysis unit funded entirely by charitable donations was constructed. A primary care diabetes centre has been established and a hospital based diabetes centre is planned and a grant application to the World Diabetes Foundation secured.
