I am an appraisor for the Trust.I have been actively involved in developing and implementing systems for clinical decision support systems, electronic discharge summaries, and e education tools. I have been an invited speaker to presented research and evaluation of these systems at HIMMS Europe and HIMMS Asia Pacific .I have been working with local branches of patient groups such as Thyroid UK and Diabetes UK to empower patients and families with skills to utilise available services to best effect and also to understand and manage their conditions more effectively.

The proposal for diabetes was published as a review for the Ceylon Medical Journal in 1994.Chaired committees in private public partnerships in chronic disease management.Developing guidelinesEditor of the first national guidelines for diabetes and osteoporosis. These were the first evidence based guidelines on any aspect of medicine produced in Sri Lanka and included representation from Ministry of Health. Teaching and training medical staff and teaching medical studentsPostgraduate teaching and trainingDeveloping innovative practices in management of Diabetes and endocrinological conditions, focusing on high quality care and emphasis on community management Conducting research on use appropriate technology and cost benefit assessments of such innovations in a Sri Lankan setting. I have presented these data to the International Diabetes Federation and have published in peer-reviewed journals. I set up an electronic medical record for community based diabetes services in 1990 which is still in use for cohort studies.Developing the use of nurse practitioners and paramedical staff in the hospital and community I obtained a grant from the British council and arranged for two Sri Lankan nurses to be trained in diabetes nursing at the Manchester Diabetes Centre. The core group conducted national training course for nurses in diabetes at ENB level. Established a charitable trust that funds these activities. A dialysis unit funded entirely by charitable donations was constructed. A primary care diabetes centre has been established and a hospital based diabetes centre is planned and a grant application to the World Diabetes Foundation secured.

Sabbatical from University of Sri Jayawardanpura spent in researching integrated care for long term conditions and managing required changes to existing systems of service provision. 6 Clinical Sessions as a NHS Consultant at Sherwood Forest Hospitals and 4 academic and teaching sessions in Sheffield.

Based at University of Sri Jayawardanpura. continuation of work performed in Newcastle but UK base changed to Sheffield. Visited Sheffield and spent 2-3 months per year in the UK. Researching integrated care for long term conditions and managing required changes to existing systems of service provision.

Sabbatical spent in working in medical education, guidelines development and acquiring management skills relevant to practice of medicine in the NHS and application to change in Sri Lankan Health care system. Chair and Member of committee advising cabinet on heath care staffing and long term conditions as part of World bank project on Non Communicable Diseases.
