-Worked within Aberdeen Fungal group-Performed high throughput antifungal drug screens-Screened a library of unique compounds made available from the Marine BioDiscovery Centre of University of Aberdeenfor potential antifungal activity-Used a microtitre plate based assay to monitor growth inhibition of C. albicans-The compounds showing activity were further investigated for fungicidal versus fungistatic activity and also in combination with approved antifungal drugs for synergistic antifungal activity using the approved checkerboard assay-They were also tested for activity against other important invasive fungal pathogens including Aspergillus fumigatus, Cryptococcus neoformans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis and Candida parapsilosis.

I worked for Dr Carol Munro, University of Aberdeen for a period of 6 months. This work was an extension of my MSc project. It mainly involved using molecular biology techniques to clone genes into E. coli vectors and generating C. albicans over-expression plasmids and over-expression C. albicans strains, which will become part of the C. albicans ORFeome library. I worked closely with another technician in the laboratory that housed over 40 researchers working on fungal pathogenesis.
