About Devin Hess
I am a Academic and serve as our Civic Education Coordinator. For the last five years, I have co-coordinated the multi-county “Integrated Action Civics” project designed to provide students with the tools of civic engagement and change-making. I have presented at numerous conferences on approaches to history instruction as well as digital strategies that emphasize pedagogy over 'tech-for-tech-sake'. I am also engaged in ongoing digital storytelling projects supporting rural development and education programs in India and Guatemala. I haves a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and have taught at both the middle and high school levels.It is my belief that education should serve the goals of empowering students to be independent learners capable of shaping the world they are inheriting. I work from the ‘Teaching for Understanding’ and ‘whole child’ approach in which the goal is deep conceptual comprehension and student empowerment, and not simply skill or factual mastery. I believe that technology in the classroom offers many tools for teachers and students, and has the potential of providing a platform for creative expression and collaborative work. The Internet offers opportunities for students to learn from and share with other peoples and cultures around the world. A broader, international perspective deepens students’ understanding of their relationship to the rest of humanity, and helps them develop their concepts of social justice - important themes in every child's education.
