Worked with a team of both technicians and biologists to monitor and facilitate the passage of adult Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Lamprey, Steelhead, Cutthroat and Bull trout through Tumwater dam on the Wenatchee River during the spring to early fall of 2016. Duties included operation of hydraulic machinery necessary for fish trapping, anesthetizing of adult fish, collection of Steelhead brood stock, data collection (Fork length, POH, scales, DNA sampling, Pit tagging, CWT identification, fish surplus, fat sampling, etc...) and data entry (Excel/ P3/Access). Managed radio tagging procedures for female Steelhead traveling upriver from tumwater dam, maintained a lotek radio telemetry reciever. Was part of the summer Chinook spawning ground surveys which included multiple river walks of several miles each, full M & E carcass work ups, Snout collection and GPS location. Participated in joint-county salmon carcass sampling efforts with grant county PUD. Functioned in tandem with Yakima valley tribal personnel for Coho broodstock collection. Have worked with remote juvenile fish screw trapping and pit tagging of Steelhead, Chinook, Coho, Dace, Sculpin, and Bull trout. I also functioned as a eDNA sampler along the White river and its tributary systems sampling for biomarkers of salmonid species. Often times work included inclement weather, heavy lifting, hiking and wading through rivers, and autonomous operation of flow-over dam fish passage facilities. Duties also consisted of observing fish passage using video recording servers, knowledge of GPS and navigation, teamwork, trail systems and topography.

    Scientific Technician Ii
Washington Department Of Fish & Wildlife Sep 2015 - Dec 2015
    Olympia, Washington, Us
Worked at an adult fish trap at Lower Granite Dam with staff from WDFW, IDFG, NOAA, and the University of Idaho. Collected broodstock for Lyons Ferry Hatchery and the Nez Perce Tribal Hatchery, and additional fish to estimate the run composition of fall Chinook to the Snake River. Identified coho, sockeye, Chinook, and steelhead. Fish were measured, scanned for wire and PIT tags, and scale sampled using a knife. Scales were subsampled, rehydrated, and mounted on scale cards.Assisted with a radio telemetry project to assess the fidelity of Snake River fall Chinook to return to their site of release and to identify fish that crossed the dam then fell back to below the dam. Inserted radio tags via esophagus, assisted in downloading Lotek receivers and mobile tracking using a Lotek SRX800 receiver.Assisted with spawning efforts at Lyons Ferry Hatchery: Collected fin clips for DNA analysis as part of parental brood tagging (PBT), collected scales from fish using forceps, mounted scales on scale cards, dissected heads, recovered and decoded coded wire tags. Gained experience removing otoliths from fall Chinook. Partook in the screening of fertile and competent hatchery bred salmon eggs. Lastly, assisted WDFW staff in performing a spawning ground survey on the Tucannon River for fall Chinook. Observed redds/test digs and flagged redds/digs. Worked up a carcass for sex, fork length, documented fin clips, scanned snout for wire, collected DNA and scales, and recorded data in a field notebook. Walked 2.2 miles in a flowing stream wearing waist waders.
  • Washington State University
    Research Assistant

    Pullman/Spokane/Tri-Cities/Vancouver/Everett/Global, Washington, Us
I was responsible for the extraction of DNA from Arabidopsis thaliana mutants as well as the running of PCR. Developed the ability to handle multiple DNA samples sets in a intuitive and succinct method so as to properly store, identify, and maintain integrity. My experience while in this position include operating a nano-drop spectrophotometer and carrying out germination assays as well. I am familiar with taking of detailed observations in lab notebooks as well as proper use of centrifuges. I am proficient in the use of micro pipettes, the mixing, pouring and running of gel electrophoresis and the handling of hazardous material. I am also comfortable in the writing of scientific articles as I have completed a detailed summary of my research in a formal format. Data entry into excel spreadsheets was an essential part of the job.
