About Devin Davis
Most of my life has been, in one way or another, spent pursuing the field of sound recording. I got my first 4-track recorder in the 6th grade and have never looked back.To put it quite simply: I truly love what I do. After cutting my teeth recording bands on tape in my home studio, I took a position as a full-time staff engineer at the esteemed ACME Recording Studio in Chicago in 2001. In between my music and voice-over client sessions, I wrote and recorded my own collection of songs, ultimately releasing the album, Lonely People of the World, Unite!, in 2005 to critical acclaim. I received write-ups in Entertainment Weekly, Salon, AllMusic, Pitchfork, and the Chicago Reader, toured the United States, performed on KEXP twice, and managed to secure song placements in independent films, trailers, and internationally broadcast television programs. For going on seventeen years I have worked in the AV Department at the Art Institute of Chicago, starting off as a freelance AV Tech and audio engineer, and moving on into the role of manager and sound designer. I currently hold the position of Director of AudioVisual Solutions. I manage a team of full-time and freelance managers and technicians, whose departmental mission is as varied as our encyclopedic collection; from executing and recording, editing, and mixing countless interviews, podcasts, lectures, live performances, webinars, and virtual meetings, to the installation of time-based media artwork in our galleries, institutional digital signage, conference room setups, and network-based AV control systems. In recent years, I have discovered an intense interest in sound design, foley recording, and composing music for video productions. In 2019 I founded Trailhead Sound, a sound design and production studio in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Some of my recent clients have include Shure Microphones, WTTW Chicago, NatGeo, Walgreens, Funny or Die, Tongal, SyFy, New York Life, and PwC, as well as Vimeo's 2019 Best of the Year Award winner Dan Rybicky, whose new short film "Stormy and the Admirals" I scored, sound designed, and mixed. I have an insatiable curiosity to understand how things work, a meticulous ear for detail, and a great eagerness to expand on my experience in all areas related to sound design.
