Conducted independent bench work proteomics research on the Tobacco Etch Virus (TEV), genus Potyvirus. A member of the Potyviridae family, TEV is one of the largest and most economically important groups of plant viruses that significantly affects many cash crops worldwide leading to stunted growth and fruit never reaching marketable size. This research developed an interaction map for TEV proteins and viral protein localizations in the context of infection for the TEV virus. Responsibilities included the cloning of TEV genes into various vectors and utilizing state-of-the-art microscopy techniques, such as bimolecular fluorescence complementation, to determine interactions between TEV proteins and their localization in living plant cells. This experimentation developed a better understanding of protein localization and their function within potyviruses. Utilizing the known viral interactions and localizations makes it possible to engineer novel viral resistant schemes.

One of 28 college students selected to participate in the Cornell Summer Scholars program. Conducted experiments to investigate the defining practical resistance in Venturia inaequalis (apple scab) populations on ‘Empire’ and ‘Jonagold’ apples. New York State is the second highest producer of apples in the United States and thus very concerned about minimizing Venturia inaequalis, one of the most devastating diseases of apples. Cornell Summer Scholars examined an ‘Empire’/’Jonagold’ apple orchard to observe development of apple scab following QoI and DMI use where the V. inaequalis population demonstrates practical resistance to DMI and QoI fungicides. Responsibilities included observing and recording disease incidence of apple scab symptoms in relation to four fungicide treatments programs. Additional duties included tracking apple scab lesion development by evaluating the lesion size and number of conidia produced per lesion on ‘Jonagold’ and ‘Empire’ apples. The research conducted by the Cornell Summer Scholars suggests relationships between lesion development, cultivar susceptibility, and fungicide resistance.
