Devin M. Kearns, Ph.D. is Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Early Literacy at North Carolina State University at Raleigh. He is also a research scientist for Haskins Laboratories affiliated with Yale University and the University of Connecticut. Devin studies how students in the elementary grades learn to read and designs instructional programs to better meet the needs of these students. He conducts research to understand the cognitive and neurobiological basis of reading and to help schools better implement multi-tiered systems of support to increase the literacy success of all students. Devin publishes articles for researchers and educators on reading difficulty and helps schools and districts implement high-quality reading instruction. He collaborates with cognitive scientists and neuroscientists to understand how knowledge in other disciplines can be used to examine the reading skills of all students. He and his colleagues design reading instructional programs to improve the foundational literacy skills of early-elementary-age students, exploring how instruction affects patterns of cognitive processing. He also works with teachers and administrators to improve their implementation of multi-tiered systems of support for readers in the early grades. Devin has seven years of classroom experience as a teacher, literacy coach, and reading specialist. He continues to help schools and districts implement high-quality reading instruction—including demonstrating how to implement evidence-based reading instruction.
