My first attempt to start a business began when I was 16. I had a push lawnmower, a weedwhacker I bought at a garage sale, and an old truck my dad gifted me for my birthday. I made flyers and paid local carriers to put my flyers in every newspaper on their route. Within four weeks, I had over 13 regular customers and a growing business I ran through high school. After college, I co-founded a bar-b-q restaurant. My friend and his father were the most talented pitmasters I had ever encountered. We realized the late-night market in our college town was heavily underserved, and our only competition at the time was fast food chains. We grossed over $300K the first year. At the heart of the pandemic, the spa where my wife worked was suffering. She saw the potential, so we took a chance and purchased that location (1 of 5 in the Central Texas-based franchise). With our combined knowledge, we were able to reduce costs by over 30% while raising revenue by over 25%.My most recent venture was born out of a personal need. My 1-year-old son dropped my wife's phone, breaking it twice in a 2-week period. No one in my small local community was servicing this market, so I had to drive 1.5 hours round trip and wait 2+ hours to get the screen repaired, all the while trying to entertain my infant. So I developed a business plan to rid my community members of this pain point. Thus the mobile repair van-based “Canyon Lake Phone and Computer Repair” was born. In our first three months, we generated over $10K in revenue and continue to grow.
