About Devin Mcmurrey, Mba

My first attempt to start a business began when I was 16. I had a push lawnmower, a weedwhacker I bought at a garage sale, and an old truck my dad gifted me for my birthday. I made flyers and paid local carriers to put my flyers in every newspaper on their route. Within four weeks, I had over 13 regular customers and a growing business I ran through high school. After college, I co-founded a bar-b-q restaurant. My friend and his father were the most talented pitmasters I had ever encountered. We realized the late-night market in our college town was heavily underserved, and our only competition at the time was fast food chains. We grossed over $300K the first year. At the heart of the pandemic, the spa where my wife worked was suffering. She saw the potential, so we took a chance and purchased that location (1 of 5 in the Central Texas-based franchise). With our combined knowledge, we were able to reduce costs by over 30% while raising revenue by over 25%.My most recent venture was born out of a personal need. My 1-year-old son dropped my wife's phone, breaking it twice in a 2-week period. No one in my small local community was servicing this market, so I had to drive 1.5 hours round trip and wait 2+ hours to get the screen repaired, all the while trying to entertain my infant. So I developed a business plan to rid my community members of this pain point. Thus the mobile repair van-based “Canyon Lake Phone and Computer Repair” was born. In our first three months, we generated over $10K in revenue and continue to grow. At City Innovations, we work with founders to identify opportunities within their market and build a business that will effectively validate and capture their target market segments. From customized product development to go-to-market strategies, our experienced and proven entrepreneurs and developers are here to ensure your budget is spent in the most efficient and effective methods to create long-term success in the marketplace. Allow us to help work with you to build you a scalable business/codebase and, more importantly, ensure the market is ready and desirous of your product and business. Our customers have developed amazing products - starting from ZERO revenue to scaling to hundreds of millions. "The Product Validation Process has been unlike anything I've ever seen. Once we understood it, it was an eye-opening 'superpower'. I can definitely see how we can move fast and build an amazing product that is actually used by our customers." - Jay HidalgoMBA: International Business and Computer Information Systems

When entering into a new venture, I always examine the Macro-Economic landscape. I want to know who I will be competing with and what factors of my business will offer me a competitive advantage. Conducting this research showed me several critical factors for servicing this industry. The main driver being that this industry underserved rural customers. I wanted to create a service that would cater to this target market and create a one-of-a-kind experience for the customer. Through my own journey as a rural-based customer, I found my main pain points were tied to getting to the retail location and then deciding whether to head back home or wait for the phone to be repaired. As the wait time was about 2 hours, It did not really make sense to drive 30-45 minutes back home and then leave again in an hour. Additionally, what if the time for the repair went longer than expected? Would my day be wasted waiting around town?I started the company through simple word of mouth and relationship-based advertising. We went on to build a website and continued to grow. After reaching a 2k a month revenue threshold, I purchased a retired FBI Surveillance van and converted it to a mobile repair station. Now our rural customers can be serviced without the inconvenience of leaving their homes; while still receiving high-quality repairs and maintenance on their home devices. Now three months since the LLC filing, we have generated over $10K in revenue and serviced over 50 customers.

During the pandemic, many service-based businesses were struggling to keep above water. My wife and I were presented with the opportunity to purchase a single location in a local spa chain where she had worked since 2017. After investigating the financial reports and cash flows, we found several areas where cost could be reduced, as well as more effective, efficient, and meaningful avenues for advertising and marketing. After the first fiscal year, we cut costs by over 30%, while raising revenue by over 25%, and are on pace for another 8-10% increase in revenue this year, with costs remaining constant. Customers love our new redesigned website. Which offers direct bookings, as well as education on our service and product offerings. Additionally, we went back to the drawing board and created a new pay structure and scheduling system which has increased employee retention and morale. ● Developed System of Spreadsheets automating all processes beyond initial sale data entry for Revenue Tracking, Payroll, and quarterly reports● Used python IP and code from other concurrent contracted role to facilitate quantifiable metrics to present to stakeholders• Files end-of-year taxes and manages accounting reports• Assembled, connected, and maintained the functionality of all hardware to network• Coordinate with contractors, GM, and customers to incorporate new services and work processes into operations• Identify pain points in customer experience and managerial workflows and create programs to automate or simplify and reduce friction

As my Senior year of undergraduate study loomed over my head my best friend and I were determined to forge our own entrepreneurial paths. We wanted to do something that our friend group could work together on, and more importantly, that would be fun and would keep the party going. At that time for every home football game, my buddy and his dad would set up their pit and cook food for our entire fraternity, and really anyone who walked up to our tent. People were absolutely blown away by the quality of their food, and were constantly talking about how surprised they were at the lack of Texas-style BBQ options in our town. San Marcos is a very popular tourist destination, with thousands of people from all over the state traveling to “float” (tube) the river. My friend was able to strike a deal with a tube rental business that would incorporate a plate of BBQ into the cost of the rental for their customers at the end of the river. We worked all summer, sweating over a hot grill, but this validated our business model, as we received raving reviews and constant questions about when we would open a physical location. As my final semester began I was able to find a prime location near campus, on the town square (where all the bars were), and was still accessible to tourists. There was even a drive-through window as the previous business was a pharmacy. Over time we learned how to refine the menu keeping our inventory low and turning over quickly. We also recognized the hours of operation and the severely underserved late-night demand the city offered. We realized being open until 3 Am gave us a significant competitive advantage over the other establishments in the area. Amazingly we averaged 20% of our business for the day during that final 1.5 hours of being open for business. As well, we constantly experimented with new and innovative marketing strategies like Hooked, Groupon, Uber eats, etc. The end result being we successfully grossed over 300K the first year.
