The project is on biodegradable polymers for surgical implants and is handled by Dr. Matt Pharr, Dr. Anastasia Muliana and Dr. Rajagopal Kumbakonam.The project will primarily focus on biodegradable polymers such as poly-lactic glycolic acid (PLGA) for temporary biomedical implants to provide specific functionality for specific patients for an intended period of time and gradually degrade and transfer the support to the tissues. Implants of complex shapes and various sizes will thus be subjected to non uniform changes in properties, size, and shape of the implants during degradation.We will also explore causes for surface and bulk erosion when the biodegradable polymers are exposed to combined mechanical loading and hydrolysis. Worked for Soft Matter Mechanics Laboratory under Dr. Chandler Benjamin. The project was on "QR decomposition work for parallel plate rheometer".The study included use of Gram Schmidt factorization of the deformation gradient. It is shown that with the use of these kinematics, one can avoid the need for using a convected, curvilinear, coordinate system, which often leads to cumbersome calculations.
