About Brandon H.

Pragmatic, creative, and impact-driven engineering leader with 25+ years of extensive professional experience. Currently focused on building, scaling, and cost-optimizing cloud-based services, products, and platforms while leading distributed teams. Additionally, I bring a wealth of expertise from my extensive history in the JVM space. Some of my primary guiding principles after experience designing and building software in everything from seed round startups to large corporations include:Automate all of the things. Continuous Integration and Delivery. Push-button builds, deploys, and rollbacks. Service Discovery. Automated ways to handle common problems and maintenance tasks (Circuit Breakers, K8S Operators, etc).Eliminate unpredictability. Builds should create the same artifact across different machines, immutable data structures, centralized configuration, unit and integration testing, proper versioning + publication of versioned artifacts. Observability, traceability, monitoring, etc.Use simple, proven, open technology & standards when possible. Spend engineering time on measurable business value & IP instead of debugging. Open platforms allow you to take in the community’s advances in commodity software.Open & honest communication, empathy, inclusion, and play to people’s strengths. Identify your strengths and weaknesses, defer to others with talent and experience in areas you don’t, help others by sharing your knowledge and experience, and work with them to learn from them, too. Staff Engineer

Irvine, California, Us

At Alteryx, I was responsible for the high-impact and visibility project of designing and leading the development of the core data processing engine for the Alteryx Analytics Cloud, reporting directly to an Engineering VP. I started on the ground floor of this initiative, needing to do a lot of R&D to figure out how to make the core engine from our Desktop Product engine run and scale cost-effectively in the cloud. Once a direction was chosen, I worked to make the project less ambiguous and able to be broken down into work that multiple teams could work on. Following that, I did self-guided work to identify and shore up shortcomings in our new cloud platform. I also worked with our Security Team to resolve FIPS compliance, password rotation, and secure service-to-service communication requirements. Toward the end of my time at Alteryx, I worked to integrate an acquisition into the company.I was also part of the Engineering Leadership group at Alteryx, which involved defining and implementing various standards, large migration efforts, designing and providing feedback on large engineering efforts, and coaching/mentoring/influencing 200+ engineers globally. Keywords: Kubernetes, Go, Docker, AWS, EKS, Linkerd, Jaeger, Open Telemetry, Java, Gradle, ArgoCD, Jenkins, Teleport, GitLab, Agile, Microservices
