Consulted intermittently while seeking a senior engineering position where Factor Ten Engineering© (10xE) principles could be pursued in the interests of clients and the planet. Per The Rocky Mountain Institute, “Although an outstanding gain in resource productivity—say, a 5x-to-10x improvement—will always be uncommon, it has been achieved. More common gains of 2x-to-4x are achievable in a high percentage of design situations, though we must emphasize that such results are not for the faint hearted. Rather, they require bold and gutsy designers and owners willing to question familiar practice and work closely with people from other disciplines.” Many of my projects have aspects that meet the 2x improvement test, such as deep temperature drop hydronic systems, high scotopic lighting systems, and sizing of biomass boiler systems at 45%+/- peak load to meet 90%+/- fuel oil offset. `

Primary duties in design, project administration, and supervision of technical staff for MEP systems and building science, for a wide variety of project types. Also provided quality assurance / quality control and technical assessment of projects for other senior project managers and engineers. Projects included building assessments, energy grants, energy systems (such as biomass, micro-hydro, waste heat recovery and wind) and MEP design for diverse buildings types including water and sewage treatment plants, office buildings and school renovations/additions.

Planned and implemented consulting engineering firm start-up. Wrote and negotiated contracts; and designed, specified, and administered projects for mechanical/electrical equipment and systems. Promoted energy efficient and productive environments and incorporated these concepts in designs.Projects included MEP design of Millar Arena in Houlton, ME, with reportedly some of the best ice in the Northeast due to desiccant dehumidification; consolidation of technical shops into one space (multiple hazardous uses) to accommodate a new kitchen/cafeteria; MEP design for a residential care facility for troubled youth; HVAC design for a VA Clinic renovation; and building assessments for schools.

Designed and administered projects up to $800,000+. Supervised drafting and technical staff and coordinated with design consultants. Supported other project managers with MEP portions of their projects. Projects included structural details for a potato storage warehouse; design of slow sand filter water treatment plant components including filter sand bed and under drain, moist environment wood structure and building enclosure details, and pumping systems; HVAC systems design for a new oncology center at Cary Medical Center in Caribou, Maine; design of MEP and structural systems (except foundation and slab) for the Fort Kent, Maine fire station; and sewage systems design such as lagoons, lagoon aeration, and MEP portions of two pump and treat ground water plants.

Participated in design of, and provided administration and field inspection of, an industrial park project valued at $800,000+. Designed variable flow pump station and dual sewage pipe river crossing (including environmental permitting) to accommodate very low initial and anticipated maximum flows. Also designed MEP systems, with radiant slab flooring, for a speculative garage space as part of the project.

Coordinated with other trades and the Army Corp of Engineers for installation and testing of $2.5 million of mechanical equipment and systems. Implemented company safety program. Performed preliminary design work for mechanical systems estimation purposes. Provided accurate estimates for projects in excess of $5 million mechanical system cost. Selected Projects:Generating coordination and detail drawings for a new military hospital's mechanical systems, including redesign of system layouts to fit the space.Designed temporary heat for a hospital project utilizing the Air Force Base district heating system high temperature hot water.
