I assisted with all behavior related activities which required an understanding of dog and cat body language; I aided with SAFER (Safety Assessment for Evaluation and Rehoming) sessions for shelter dogs and temperament tests for cats, provided basic training and enrichment to the animals, introduced dogs to each other, facilitated puppy socialization, and helped rescue, transfer and transport dogs to and from the shelter.

This was a semester long internship where I worked 18 hours a week at the shelter. I was responsible for the daily cleaning of the kennels, equipment and facility, feedings in the mornings and walking dogs at least twice a day. This internship allowed me to work with different species of animals such as dogs, cats, bunnies, guinea pigs, snakes, hamsters, mice, rats, birds and gerbils.

I coached elementary-middle school aged children at the Illini Land Fellowship of Christian Athletes day camp. This required teaching kids the basic knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in cheerleading. I also mentored and gave advice and insight to them on my own personal experiences.
