Centennial Volunteer Ambassador
Student Conservation Association - National Park Service
Canyon De Chelly National Monument
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), created the Centennial Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) program to aid with the government's initiative--Play, Learn, Work, Serve--to get a million volunteers to serve on public lands in four years. Currently, there are over 100 CVAs serving at parks around the nation to help achieve this goal. One of the sites is Canyon de Chelly National Monument (CACH). As a cultural heritage site, CACH is surrounded by low income and under-served families on the Navajo Nation. With the CVA's assistance, CACH will increase NPS outreach to this non-traditional audience on the Navajo Nation where over 95% of the local population is Navajo, a group commonly underrepresented in NPS activities. At Canyon de Chelly, CVA's primary duties are to promote volunteer and conservation programs in the community; engage the public through community activities and outreach events; and advertise volunteer events via the park website, facebook and newspaper. Other duties include assisting park staff with routine visitor center operations such as opening, closing, cleaning, restocking, and assisting staff in the Cultlural and Natural Resources division where duties pertain to resource preservation. Additional opportunities include working with park staff in nearby NPS units at Hubbell Trading Post NHS and Navajo National Monument.
