As Yeoman onboard Submarines (YNSS), I received extensive training in administrative support to officers and enlisted personnel. I was responsible for information related to Navy occupations, general education, requirements for promotion, and rights and benefits, It was my responsibility to keep the ship's daily schedule running by receiving visitors, answering the telephone, sorting mail, organizing files and operating modern office equipment. I also handled all of the ordering and distribution of supplies. For 2 years, I also served as the USS NEW MEXICO (SSN779) DTS Coordinator; handling all travel inputs and claims and activating and deactivating all government travel cards.My daily responsibilities included but were not limited to; operating and typing correspondence and reports; organizing and maintaining files; Receiving office visitors and handling telephone communications; Operating computers, word processing, duplicating, audio-recording and other office machines; Performing administrative functions for legal proceedings; serving as office managers; Performing other various clerical and administrative duties; Interviewing personnel; Writing official letters and correspondence; Maintaining enlisted/officer service records, until they went electronic. I was assigned to the newest Submarine in the Navy, the Virginia Class Submarine USS NEW MEXICO (SSN779) for my initial sea tour. I was later assigned duties in an office environment at The Naval Submarine Support Center in Norfolk, VA. While in the Navy, I often times worked alone with little supervision.
