Hello, My name is Devon Hoskins and I am graduating from Oregon State University this June with a degree in Analytical Chemistry with an option in Forensic Science and a minor in Toxicology. I really like chemistry, but haven't found the specific branch I love yet. I like Inorganic, Environmental, and Organic Chemistry. Currently I am working as a TA for Physical Chemistry at OSU.I am also currently working for Dr. David Cann in the electroceramics lab on campus. The research lab is an electrical engineering lab where I work as a Materials Chemist using Solid State synthesis to create different oxide ceramics as well as different doped ceramics that are tested for electrical properties at ultra high temperature (1300-1600C). My job is to create the high quality ceramic samples that are tested and characterize them using powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) before they are tested for their properties. I also seasonally work for the Oregon Department of Forestry as a Wildland Firefighter in Klamath Falls Oregon. I have worked there seasonally since 2018 and fought over 100 fires in the state. I am a firefighter on a type 6 wildfire engine and In the 2022 fire season I was promoted and was in charge of my own fire engine. I had to train my crew member and run incidents that I was dispatched to. One of the fires I was in charge of was a 55 acre fire where I coordinated with over 10 different resources (75+ people) to suppress the fire. I also coordinated with air resources to drop a 1.4 million dollar heavy air tanker drop on that fire to lay retardant down one of the sides of the fire to buy time for the crews to get in and suppress the fire.my main duties were to patrol our assigned areas and respond to fires that we were dispatched to. Once dispatched my main job was to navigate to the destination, communicate on the radio, and prepare gear for use. When we arrived on scene, I would also have to participate in the initial attack of the fire using different strategies and a variety of tools that were situation dependent.from 2015-2018 I worked as a Outdoor Service Representative for Running Y Ranch Resort golf course in Klamath Falls. I did a plethora of odd jobs every day, but my job mostly consisted of washing used golf carts and preparing them for play as well as picking up golf balls off the driving range and redepositing them into the ball dispenser so that the range could operate smoothly. I occasionally would work in the pro shop if they were short staffed for the day.
