Teaching responsibilities include core environmental health course and risk assessment. Research focuses on social determinants of environmental contaminant exposures and health risks, especially among minority populations, and designing policy solutions to address these disparities.

Managed, directed and administered NCER’s extramural human health Science to Achieve Results (STAR) research program including developing and determining expenditures for $17 million annual extramural budget, directing and mentoring scientific staff members, including 5 project officers, 3 research fellows, and 4 student interns, and overseeing approximately 65 active research grants and interagency agreements. Areas of research included use of exposure biomonitoring for policy analysis, cumulative risk assessment, environmental health indicator development, children’s environmental health and environmental health of minority populations. Ensured multiple contract work assignments for technical support are managed and implemented properly. Served as NCER’s primary contact on human health research planning and coordination for EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) and collaborate with ORD’s National Program Directors, EPA Program Offices, Regions, and ORD Centers/Laboratories. In addition to Assistant Center Director duties, also served for 5 months as acting Division Director and supervised HRFD staff of 15 full-time employees and participated as active member of NCER senior management team. Research areas of interest include use of exposure biomonitoring for policy analysis, risk assessment, environmental health indicator development, children’s environmental health and environmental health of minority populations.

Identified, tracked, researched and responded to critical regulatory and science policy issues at EPA that impact children’s health. Represented OCHP on EPA’s Regulatory Steering Committee, a cross-agency committee that manages the overall rule making process at EPA. Reviewed and prepared technical comments on exposure and risk assessments and policy options developed by EPA program offices in support of regulatory actions to ensure children’s health issues are adequately addressed. Presented briefings on regulatory policy and science issues for EPA’s Federal Advisory Committee of outside experts on children’s health, the Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee (CHPAC). Supervised employees including interns and detailees from other offices. Ensured multiple contract work assignments for technical support were managed and implemented properly.

Conducted original research on environmental health issues to inform policy development and provide guidance on science policy at EPA. Developed and presented Office of Policy science position on several cross-agency workgroups including information quality guidelines, internal agency technical reviews of chemical toxicity assessment (IRIS), lead in remodeling and renovation rule; risk assessment harmonization; and cumulative risk assessment.

Directed all program, policy and administrative activities of the Division of Environmental Health. Managed 113 employees and $4 million annual budget for 4 major programs: Food and Institutional Facilities Inspections, Animal Control, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and Community Environmental Health. Represented BCHD in public venues including state legislative testimony, public presentation, media interviews, and intergovernmental working groups.
