Within Debenhams, I learned quickly about company policies and standards. These had to be known for things like returns, sales, and exchanges. I often used a handheld scanner to check for size availability and also when Christmas time became busier, the click and collect section of the store was extremely busy and it was important to know where deliveries came in and how to process them through the computer. I worked well with my co-workers to ensure at the end of the shift each section of our floor was cleaned properly, all new deliveries were put out onto the shop floor and any stock was replenished. By being a good team, most of the work was very easy and we were able to communicate any minor problems. Debenhams had incentives every month about their own Debenhams credit card and who could sign up the most amount of people. This was very motivating as towards Christmas there would be prizes that motivated the staff and I developed my persuasion skills by gaining as much product knowledge as possible then being able to confidently talk to a customer about it and make the sale.

As a retail sales assistant within the Nike Factory Store in Antrim, I was able to adapt quickly to weekly promotions changing and having the till knowledge to change the promotions as the weeks changed. I also developed knowledge about the company background and each month during staff training, learnt more information about specialised products coming out or into the store. I was able to use handheld scanners to retrieve items not on the shop floor and also check for available sizes in other retail stores within Northern Ireland. Nike also had a membership program where employees of the store would have incentives for the month to reach a certain goal such as sales in footwear goal or most membership sign-ups. I achieved the most memberships of the month a few times and would be very motivated each month to be at the top of the leaderboard for the incentive. By communicating with my co-workers through radios I was able to ask for advice for a certain product if I did not know it and also ask if my co-workers had certain sizes around them. This was also used to communicate if anyone was stealing within the shop. Here the company policies had to be taken seriously and I had to be extremely professional when communicating to a supervisor or manager about a difficult situation such as this.At each staff training, we worked on our teamwork skills by playing games together at the start as an ice breaker then during a shift it was easier to help each other on the shop floor to get the work done and to the standard the company set out.
