CurrentAs the Interim Director, I oversee several critical departments, including the First Generation Plus Success Center, Student Basic Needs, and the Veterans Resource Center, all focused on student success and well-being. As a Central Committee Advisor I was fortunate to work alongside a group of student fellows and professional staff to cultivate a safe community of self-identified male students of color by providing culturally centered programs strengthened with leadership, service, developmental, and academic opportunities. The team led efforts in working alongside students throughout the university to develop programs that promote college retention, using students inclusion and engagement, leveraging various department resources, collaborating with faculty and staff across campus, and creating a space where students were able to come together to work on their social-, emotional-, academic-, and professional-well being. We were able to secure funding for the academic year, hire student fellows, organize retreats, and create programming that includes: talking circles, workshops on masculinity, identity, financial literacy trauma/resilience, and graduate school planning, as well as a men of color panel, which would engage alumni, staff, and faculty.

As an Academic & Career Advisor I had the privilege to provide holistic academic and career advising with a commitment to first-gen, low-income, and traditionally marginalized students. I was able to assist students in major and minor exploration, academic planning, withdrawal and transfer advising, job and internship search, cover letter review, resume review, mock interviews, and the graduate school application process. In addition to providing personalized advising, I was able to introduce a new workshop that exposed students of the different processes involved in securing and becoming a competitive applicant for internships in Washington, D.C. I also partnered with the Multicultural Center and Scholars Without Borders to create a Graduate School presentation specifically for students who are historically underrepresented in graduate school programs across the U.S.
Young Men Of Color (Ymoc) College Success Fellow
As the co-creator of the Young Men of Color Initiative at San Fernando High School, the mission is to advance young Latino males into academic scholars, community leaders, and young professionals. The program aims to increase the number of Latino males matriculating and graduating successfully from high school and four-year institutions of higher education. In addition to developing and leading the program, I introduced high school and college students with research-informed and best practices that advance social and economic well-being. I worked with 19 other LA County organizations, including community-based non-profits, community colleges, four year private universities and four year public universities to share and gather knowledge of program strategies and outcomes to better assist communities of color.

During my time as a social work graduate intern for PolicyLab at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), I conducted research, literature reviews, program assessments and collaborated with state and city health programs alongside the Improvement Advisor, Medical Doctors, and Directors of the hospital. I collected research and data on Latino education, institutions, and communities, created and/or updated presentations, fact sheets, one-pagers or talking points for policy briefs, and was a liaison between the WHI and local and national Latino organizations and federal agencies. Success in this role includes working on a team to perform national outreach encouraging public, private, and non-profit contributions, which resulted in a collective investment of $335 million to build on high-quality education for the nation’s Latino population.
