I am in charge of ensuring the specimens not analyzed on site are transported to LabCorp on time every day. Every morning before the clinic opens, I quality control every machine (Medonic, Piccolo CMP, Siemmens UA, and the Troponin). I use a software called LabTrak to transfer data and lab results between the analytical machines and eClinicalWorks (our electronic charting system). When the machines or software are having technical difficulties, I am able to troubleshoot the issues until they are solved. This role also gave me experience in drawing blood from 'lab visit only' patients. I am researching the effects of the copolymer P188 on cell membranes. Because there is evidence of P188 having a healing effect on cell membranes, I am helping to design a synthesis to add Vitamin C to either end of P188 so that the antioxidant properties of Vitamin C and the membrane binding properties of P188 would be coupled. I experienced the fast paced routine of a radiation oncologist by following them on their daily routines and treatment plans, documenting which procedures were used for what disease, and observing how the progression of the disease dictated the type of treatment used. I also observed the protocols for using the radiation machine, how cancers are measured and labeled on scans to be treated, and how to make patient reports after their appointments.
