I'm an Emmy-nominated media professional and Senior Program Officer for Journalism & Media at the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, a nonprofit (private operating foundation) focused on driving policy solutions to three global peace and security challenges: climate change, nuclear conflict, and mass violence and atrocities. The Stanley Center values independent and accurate journalism and the role it plays in building more informed, just, and accountable societies. In my role at the Stanley Center, I develop, co-design, and carry out a range of programs tailored for journalists and other members of the media to enable rigorous and impactful reporting related to the center’s three issue areas – all of which represent profound global threats to humankind that cannot be solved by one country or actor alone.Prior to joining the Stanley Center, I developed and produced award-winning documentaries, cable and broadcast series, feature films and other media content for HBO, Showtime, The Sundance Channel, A&E and Fox Searchlight, Visa, Amnesty International and others. A common thread in all my work is a focus on stories that both emotionally engage and inform and shape policies that can help create a better world. While my professional life unfolded primarily in Los Angeles, I grew up in Marshalltown, IA and got my B.A. from the University of Iowa before heading to Hollywood for an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences internship at Viacom Productions.In 2014, I was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy as a producer on the HBO documentary, American Winter, a film about the personal stories of families falling into poverty after the Great Recession. In addition to developing and producing the film, I played a key role in implementing the film’s nationwide outreach campaign, which led to hundreds of screenings and events across the U.S. in partnership with nonprofit organizations and inspired a U.S. Senate Hearing featuring testimony from four of the film’s subjects. Other projects have focused on human rights, disability, sexuality, genocide, criminal justice, and the environment.I spent a year studying at the Institute for European Studies in Vienna, and in my twenties, I backpacked, volunteered, and worked across the globe. At one time, I could speak German and had a basic grasp of Spanish and Malay. In December 2022, I earned a Master of International Policy and Practice at The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs.
