HR leadership for a James Beard award-winning business included 26 businesses with a headcount ranging from 750 to 1000 employees.Responsible for overseeing a lean and mean HR department that included recruiting, payroll, benefits administration, employee engagement, employee relations, and health/wellness programs.Working for a restaurant company is HARD, but it's also wonderful. A zillion different things are happening at any one time, and everyone is trying their best to deliver an experience that will blow the guest's minds. The upsides are incredible experiences and opportunities to be part of culinary history, try all sorts of cuisines, and iterate on the go. People who thrive here are multi-taskers who can go with the flow, see what needs to be done, and lean into their courage to show up.The downside is that you're always on, there's always someone working, something is always happening, and it's hard work. The beauty of working in this company was that many of the people who worked there found the upside to be stronger than the downside.The importance of restaurants in our communities is undeniable. They create space for human gatherings, which fosters human connection. As Brené Brown writes, “Connection is why we're here. We are hardwired to connect with others, it's what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it there is suffering.”I grew up working in restaurants and reached my peak hospitality career experience when I held the HR Director role. That said, it became clear to me at a certain point that there was another peak I wanted to summit, and that was coaching others to thrive in their careers. Without my hospitality background, I wouldn't be the person I am today, and I am sublimely grateful for the experience.

Headed up the special events program for this unique floating museum on Lake Union dedicated to preserving, documenting, and educating our community on PNW maritime history. Specifically, I organized the annual auction fundraiser and managed wooden boat donations for the center.Before working at CWB, I volunteered at the museum to help with their public sailing and youth programs. I was working long hours at Kozmo.com and felt like I was missing some purpose in my life. I have always loved the water and sailing since I was raised by PNW fishing family. I even had a gillnetter named after me called the Devony Leigh! Working at CWB was fun and joyful and gave me a way to reconnect with myself so that I wasn't just working but thriving in my life. Being there opened me up to seeing things in a new way and be with people that shared my interests.
