Youth Worker

Greater Boston Area

The Summer Leadership Program (SLP) began in 1995, with SLP 2018 marking our 24th summer. The program provides young people aged 14-19 with an exciting, powerful and life-changing summer of community building, political education and leadership development. Young people come to SLP concerned about injustice and ready to learn more, and emerge from SLP ready to be part of a broader movement for social change.Once accepted into the Summer Leadership Program, students participate in a three-day, two-night retreat in order to explore identity, power and privilege, and build a sense of community. Then they launch into six and a half weeks of intensive seminar learning, and concrete community action projects, all tackling critical issues of social justice. As a youth staff, I assisted in leading skills training for students. Skills Training is an essential part of the program providing leadership development for participants such as facilitation training, public speaking, curriculum design, and more. I also helped coordinate Assembly (which happens every morning during the start of the program day) and We Rise Up (the closing retreat). While students were in seminars, I played a key administrative roles such as calling participants who aren’t present. In addition, I played key mentoring and support roles like leading family group and checking in with youth. For more about The City School, and the Summer Leadership Program, visit https://thecityschool.org/summer-leadership-program
