At SLA it was my responsibility to see that a given number of 8th grade students would receive one-on-one basic skills math tutorial for the duration of one semester-program. For each semester I would interview and hire a host of prospective tutors. I have personally conducted nearly four hundred tutor interviews, the majority of which have receded from memory though a select few remain as glaring examples of professionalism. Dex Bindra was one such meeting. As early as the first week of training, Dex was an active participant, willing to offer input as well as ask difficult questions pertaining to student-misbehavior procedure and managing special needs cases within tutorial sessions. I found his comments and questions to be of a particular advantage to his fellow tutors. It became increasingly clear that Dex would prove to be a valuable asset to the SLA program. That is why I paired him with a particularly introverted student. Twice a week Mr. Bindra would make the lengthy commute to work with his student on developing basic math skills. Mr. Bindra met the challenge of working with his student fervently, developing his own worksheets and refining goals. His hard work and determination directly resulted in the measurable improvement of his student by a 43% increase on the student's basic math skills assessment. Mr. Bindra was more than a fantastic tutor; he was also a model employee, punctual and professional. Dex was quick to learn and excited to help. Needless to say, we were grateful that Dex continued to work with the program throughout the following spring semester of '09. He was promoted to the position of Lead Tutor and given a team of tutors to supervise. His responsibilities included reviewing his tutors' daily lesson plans, advocating for the needs and concerns of his team, and serving as the figure of authority within his tutorial room. As a Lead Tutor, Dex would also have his own students. Mr. Bindra tutored a pair of students for each set of days – four students in total. It was beyond our expectations and of great assistance to the program as well as a selfless service to his students. Mr. Bindra’s success in the program can be attributed to a combination of traits. First, it is a foundation of a strong work ethic; this energizes his professionalism, as regards dress, timeliness and conduct. Second, Dex has a perceptible sense of self; he is confident when working with students and managing tutors, he is charismatic in his delivery, and a natural leader. But, most importantly, he exudes a genuine desire to serve others. I highly recommend Mr. Bindra. It has been my sincere pleasure knowing Dex personally and professionally."
