Team Treasurer, Osu Experimental Sounding Rocket Team

Corvallis, Oregon, United States

I was the Team Treasurer for the Oregon State University (OSU) American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA) Team. My close friend and I revived the team in 2024 after not existing at the University for some time. The entire team, include myself was entirely new to rocketry. The team's purpose is to design and build a custom rocket to reach 10,000ft and compete at the 2024 Spaceport America Cup. The closer you reach the target apogee, the higher you are scored.I acted as both a treasurer and a co-leader for the team, founding it with my friend, who was appointed to be the Team Lead. Together, we recruited 10 team members and 3 other Engineering Capstone students. We were accepted to the rocket competition in November, secured funding in December, and began designing our rocket in January. We began manufacturing in April and after three weeks, launched our first test flight. We reached an apogee of 10,013ft. We went on to compete in June at Spaceport America, New Mexico. Unfortunately, a component of our motor failed at takeoff, resulting in our flight being cut short. Due to the endless hurdles the team had to overcome to get where we did and our inexperience in rocketry, it was recognized as a truly impressive achievement for the entire team. From my experience on the team, I gained a great deal of skills. I primarily managed the five subteams and ensured they were coordinated. Due to our team being small, I did a significant amount more than my treasurer and lead duties. I was the most experienced person on the team when it came to composites, which is a key manufacturing technique for rockets. I also developed a simulation in MATLAB to assist with numerous calculations for our air brake system. I also led and organized all of the technical writing for the team and am a primary author of each of the reports. You can read more about what I did on my website at dextercarpenter.github.io/portfolio
