Senior Content Developer & Project ManagerHilferty Museum Planning & Exhibit Design Feb 2009 - Nov 2011Athens, Ohio, UsI contemplated all aspects of the visitor experience, from initial approach and parking to restroom locations and gift shop offerings. I have experience with interpretive master planning as well as exhibit development. I spent a lot of time listening and working closely with the client to tease out the stories to tell. As a content developer, I helped select artifacts and images and collaborated with the designer to bring the stories to life in an engaging and imaginative way. I also provided content research and wrote and edited label copy.In addition to my role as developer, I tackled project management duties including contract review, budgeting, and scheduling. -
Assistant Curator, Special ExhibitionsThomas Jefferson Foundation Oct 2006 - Feb 2009Charlottesville, Va, UsI had the unique privilege of joining the dedicated staff at Monticello during a watershed project. The visitor center, formerly over a mile down the road from the house (and therefore missed by many visitors) was vacated and a new one was built at the foot of the mountaintop--forever changing the visitor experience.I contributed to four exhibitions and the introductory film for the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center. As the liaison between the exhibit designers and Monticello staff, I helped shape content, edited label copy and layouts, completed image research and procured rights, and helped select artifacts. Exhibits include traditional displays as well as technology-driven presentations. -
Curatorial AssistantSmithsonian Institution, Museum Of Natural History Jan 2005 - Oct 2006Washington, Dc, UsI was extremely lucky to land a position with Dr. Douglas Owsley, Head of Anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History. What began as an internship, happily morphed into a paid position. My main project was an exhibition entitled "Written in Bone" that is at the museum until 2013. I came in fairly early in the process and was able to help shape the content--mostly trying to help translate complicated science for the average visitor. I pulled together a library of sources on early Chesapeake settlement and life-ways and provided summaries of the main themes for the exhibit. In addition to working on the exhibition, I scanned slides for the image library, worked on PowerPoint presentations for Doug, and became the "office editor" for reports and other correspondence. I also was able to help with once-in-a-lifetime projects, like the opening and study of three 19th-century iron coffins.
