My role as an engineer-in-training at Loewen involves the design and development of new parts and products for fenestration. My day-to-day tasks involve heavy use of AutoDesk Inventor to model window parts and assemblies. I have been able to rapid-prototype conceptual designs using our 3D printer.I have improved in: skeletal modelling techniques, programming with iLogic, knowledge of product ratings and certification, knowledge of the North American Fenestration Standard (NAFS), and overall fenestration product knowledge.

During my second work-term at Price Mechanical Industrial, I continued to work on HVAC unit design and HVAC component design. I was able to review customer requests and size appropriate HVAC components such as filters, fans, motors, burners, and cooling coils. I learned to read fan curves for blower sizing and to calculate piping and fittings for refrigeration design.Day-to-day activities included using SolidWorks to model air handling unit configurations, creating complete customer packages by providing supportive equipment specifications from our suppliers, and creating purchase orders once units are approved. During this term, I was responsible for creating a database of previously-built and in-production models. My ongoing responsibility was to update and maintain this database.

During my first work-term at Price Mechanical Industrial, I learned to use SolidWorks for sheet metal modelling. I picked this up quickly and was tasked with updating the standard parts database from AutoCAD 2D drawings to 3D sheet metal models. I was able to, and encouraged to, observe units being manufactured on the shop floor. I created sheet metal flat patterns and bend drawings for the brake operator to reference. Using SolidWorks FlowSimulator, I did analysis on direct-fired heat exchanger design to optimize tube bank placement, arrangement, and distance of the heat-source.
