After serving on the Expresso board for more than five years, I was asked to assume the role of CEO/President and successfully managed the process of finding a buyer for the company's assets. Expresso is the creator and manufacturer of virtual reality exercise equipment targeted at the health club market.
I spent eight months in Boston working with the studio that created BioShock on their next unannounced game project. When 2K Boston was independent development studio Irrational Games, I served as a member of their board of directors and was involved in the sale of the company of Take Two Games.
Mentor to the San Marin High School Robotics Club in the FTC and FRC competitions.

As President of Sierra On-Line and a member of the Operating Committee of Vivendi-Universal Games, I was responsible for the direction of software development, marketing and publishing of one of the broadest ranges of consumer software in the industry. Sierra game products during this time included Half-Life, NASCAR Racing 3 and 4, the Hoyle Casino and Card lines as well as hundreds of other titles in the action, strategy, family and sports genres. The company also developed home productivity software including Print Artist, Generations, and the Hallmark Card Studio line. I was a key player in the $800 million sale of the company to Havas (a division of Vivendi, now Vivendi-Universal) and later in the integration of the games unit into the Paris-based parent company. Additionally, I served as a board member of the IDSA, the leading trade group for the interactive software industry and sponsor of the yearly E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) conference.
As head of all product development activities and a member of Palladium's Board of Directors, I was responsible for the direction and implementation of the Company's product plan. I was brought in to bring more focus, direction and professional product development experience to the Company. Palladium's Ultimate Family Tree became the number two title in the then rapidly growing genealogy category rising to nearly 30% market share in one year. Palladium, a venture funded company, continued on a steady growth path, doubling yearly sales during its four years of existence. Other Palladium products included a kid's line featuring Wishbone, the star of his own hit PBS series, and a line of products published under an agreement with Highlights for Kids magazine division. Humor titles included PYST and The X-Fools.
In my role as head of product development, I was in charge of all efforts involved in creating both internal and external products, staffing internal projects, evaluating and applying technology and setting strategic product direction. Also, as a member of the three-person Executive Committee, I was involved in setting top-level policy for the Company. In addition to playing a major role in the negotiations that led to Electronic Art's investment in the Company, I was instrumental in the turnaround and subsequent reemergence of Accolade as a successful software company. Accolade's franchise strategy was lead by products such as Deadlock I and 2, Hardball 5 and 6, Jack Nicklaus 4 and 5, the Jack Nicklaus Online Tour, Test Drive 4 and Test Drive Off-Road.
As head of product development worldwide and a member of both the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, I had the profit/loss and product design and development responsibility for the Company. I managed a 300-person R&D operation spanning seven locations in the US and Europe. I played a central role in the $462 million sale of the Company to Pearson Plc in May 1993. Additionally, I was active in the successful acquisitions of Strategic Simulations Inc, Atreid Concepts (Bordeaux, France) and MicroLogic (Emeryville, CA). At Mindscape, I played a very visible role in corporate affairs with countless magazine interviews and numerous speaking engagements including keynote speeches or panel appearances at COMDEX, MILIA, Alex Brown Technology Conference, Digital World and the National Educational Film & Video Festival. Television appearances included The Computer Chronicles, PC TV, CNN's Hollywood Minute, and an appearance on The Today Show promoting the "Miracle Piano Teaching System" which included playing Happy Birthday for Katie Couric!
I originally came to the Toolworks with the title of Director of Software Development to work on 3D game technology. Next, I led the team that developed the 'Sizzle' software environment, the centerpiece of the Company's early OEM and CD-ROM products. Following a number of successful OEM projects, I was named Director of OEM Development. In 1990, I became Chief Technical Officer, Sr. Vice President and Director of Software Development. In that capacity I was responsible for charting the technical direction for the Company, for the design and implementation of all products developed with internal resources. I also served as a consultant on all products developed by outside contractors for the Company. Additionally, I served in various other capacities including Corporate Jester, tour guide (over 1,000 tours given), piano teacher to Smokey Robinson (really!!) and general-purpose radio/television celebrity.
I founded Spectre Technologies, a software developer and publisher of utility software, in the early days of the personal computer. Spectre developed and published numerous titles on many of the early personal computer platforms including machines from Osborne, Kaypro and Radio Shack. Spectre was a supplier of products to The Software Toolworks which later acquired the Spectre product line. Product offerings included the now classic Twist & Shout, which was later renamed Lengthwise because many corporate purchasing departments wouldn't allow purchases of anything called Twist & Shout.
Livermore, Ca, Us
Following the junior year of my undergraduate work, I worked for Dr. John DeGroot at the Livermore Lab doing numerical analysis of plasmas. My group was investigating the generation of controlled fusion reactions with lasers with the goal of energy production. I was allowed to have fun pushing around some of most amazing computer "iron" in the world at that time.
