The National Infrastructure Plan 2011 included the first iteration of a detailed pipeline of future projects and programmes in both the public and the private sector. The NIP also committed government to utilize the visibility of the pipeline and improve strategies dialogues with the suppliers so that government can explain its procurement needs, identify areas in which there are capabilities gabs in the supply chain that needs to be addressed to meet future demand and take action to remove barriers to growth.In April 2012, a pilot capability analysis, focusing on the demand for tunnelling identified the NIP and pipeline was established by BIS. The sectoral analysis demonstrates that future slicing of the pipeline allowed industry and government to better understand the skills, technologies, materials and other capabilities needed to meet future needs. This work is to be delivered in collaboration with the industry and aims to grow and improve UK capabilities in key sectors (and) to increase the opportunity for UK based firms to respond innovatively and efficiently to demand from both public and private sectors.Within this context, my research project will:- Identify resources and skills requirements to deliver that pipeline, based on current industry practice;- Identify and likely market shift which will change supply chain approaches to delivery;- Establish existing capacity and capability in the supply chain; - Carry out gab analysis to identify where current capability and capacity is lacking in relation to future pipeline, and - Propose an implementation plan to ensure these steps are delivered.
