Thesis title "Development of New Cyclobutenone Rearrangements and their Applicationin Target Syntheses"Study and development of novel transformations of cyclobutenones to complex heteroaromatics using the Moore Rearrangement as the primary methodology. My Ph.D. involved the total synthesis of analogues of the natural product Cribrostatin 6 as well as indepth studies into the torquoselectivity of these reactions and how these can be manipulated to generate interesting dihydrofuropyridinone type structures. A brief study into the total synthesis of Alpkinidine was also attempted.

I analysed a variety of solids and liquids and determined their elemental content by the use of Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emisson Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Depending on whether it was a solid or liquid I was analysing, different preparative techniques were required before the sample could be analysed. Subsequently after a sample has been tested I had to interpret the data. This involved correcting for any contaminations from the preparation procedure, or interferences from the matrices of the sample.

This involved working with 3 pharamaceutical companies (Novarties, Lilly and Evotec) quite closely over a 4 week period. It involved us synthesising compounds of direct relevance and interest to the company. It allowed us hands on experience to interpret real NMR spectra and allowed development of team work and time management skills, which were necessary to complete the project on time.See video below:

Over the Summers of 2010 and 11 I worked as an IT Technician at Rainham Mark Grammar School. This involved me setting up a number of computers ready for the start of the new school year. This was a manual role involving me to move things around the site and keeping order lists of school assets that I was setting up. This gave me experience in the hardware aspects of computers and also gave me the opportunity to learn new things.
