I also periodically report overseas for the international desk.I've covered U.S. foreign policy and all that it entails: Diplomacy, trade, sanctions and security. I previously worked at Al Jazeera English & America for nearly 7 years, focusing on migration, conflict, democracy and human rights in the MENA region and beyond.I've covered breaking news after the-earthquake and tsunami in Japan, reporting on how the ongoing nuclear meltdown and the secretive industry continue to effect communities surrounding Fukushima's battered nuclear plant.I've also reported on constitutional issues in the US, from indefinite detention to immigration and access to reproductive health.In the course of doing my job I was disappeared and interrogated for nearly three weeks in Syria in 2011, and was among the first to report on the secret prisons and torture centers there.I've previously worked at several daily newspapers, including the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Seattle Times, Asahi Evening News in Tokyo and The Arizona Republic.Born in Iran, I was raised in Tehran, Dubai, Vancouver B.C., and have held fellowships and residencies at Harvard, Cambridge and the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Centre. I'm a citizen of the US, Canada and Iran.
