I've been teaching for 30 years. Have been a Director of Studies for a Summer School: appointed as Centre Manager for a Summer School at Oxford University: an IELTs Speaking Examiner: taught English Language to Lithuanian Government Ministers, Spanish Military Officers, YLs & Adults. As Director of Studies I managed a team of teachers & activity assistants involving meetings, appraisals, staff performance/behaviour, dismissal, care of staff especially with newly qualified teachers needing support. Students were YLs boarding for 4/5 weeks, therefore care was catered from a pastoral and academic aspect. We provided a disciplined but friendly environment, the emphasis on students having a happy and rewarding experience. At that time we were being British Council inspected so strict accounting of all records/documents was essential. I taught for 2 years in the Middle East with the British Council and was a Judge for the Middle East 'Short Story Competition', part of the British Council's 75th Anniversary celebrations. I was the BC Teacher representative at TESOL Arabia, Dubai and taught on a five week programme in an Orphanage in Doha, a high profile project piloted by the BC and sponsored by the Emir of Qatar. It required great sensitivity given the backgrounds of some students.My MA research was on SEN/LD and how it's managed in language schools, courses taught and training by accredited centres and appears to be an area of teaching, seriously lacking. My research was acknowledged as - "An interesting study of an important and under-researched topic. It makes important points on how the field of ELT has failed to incorporate approaches to learning difficulties and raises important questions on how ELT should and could pay greater attention to learning difficulties". Critical if we want students to succeed.
